Sunday, 4:04pm: Anyone hoping for a peaceful, enjoyable viewing experience during the mens final is almost immediately disappointed in Event 6. At this point, that’s your own fault. This is Day 3 of Semifinals, and no one leaves emotionally unscarred. is all of us when he closes his eyes and wonders—apparently rhetorically—“Why does it always gotta be like this?”

By “this,” he means the heartrending drama unfolding in pretty much all of the outside lanes—the lanes where bubble fights are won and lost. Per usual, the men’s final delivers both. is out here throwing Hail Marys. is getting savagely hit on his blindside. And then there’s , who intercepts the ball and runs it all the way down the field for a touchdown.

When it’s all said and done, Tyler has fallen outside of contention, Jake has come 12 points short of it, and Spencer has clawed his way into it for the very first time. The level of joy in the coliseum is directly proportionate to the level of heartbreak. We are no longer even in a coliseum—we’re in a glass case of emotion. As Scott points out: “I guess that’s what makes it all worth it.”

Stay classy, Knoxville.

Sunday, 3:15pm: Relief. That’s the emotion that floods ’s face when MC announces that she has finished 4th overall and earned a spot at the 2022 . Given her Open and Quarterfinals performances, this was not supposed to be particularly newsworthy. Everyone expected Brooke to sail through Semifinals, not scrape through them by a margin of 2 points. At least not until yesterday morning, when a disastrous finish in Event 3 flipped the script. From that moment on, Brooke has been fighting uphill.

You can’t make this stuff up: Brooke’s comeback this weekend is a perfect microcosm of the comeback required for her to get here. Nine months ago, she was undergoing reconstructive elbow surgery to repair the damage from the traumatic injury she sustained at the 2021 CrossFit Games. Back then, no one thought it was even remotely possible for her to be competing right now. So to come that far only to encounter yet another setback right out of the gate? Oof. It was a bad weekend, Brooke says. To have it all finally pay off is just such a relief. “I can finally breathe,” she says, through happy tears.

Once again, we’re all crying with her.

Sunday, 2:57pm: There are two battles playing out in the women’s final. There’s the a fight for 1st overall between and with the MACC championship on the line. Then there’s the fight for 5th overall between and with a invitation on the line. Since Danielle leads the event wire to wire, all eyes are on the bubble fight in lanes 2 and 3, where Rebecca is pulling away from Kelly.

Rebecca is the second woman to arrive at the final barbell; by the time Kelly joins her 20 seconds later, it’s barely a race anymore. So much for a dramatic ending.

Then a few things happen all at once. A foot away from the finish line, Rebecca’s elbow gives out. Rebecca stumbles, then abruptly drops her bar. And just like that, Kelly is back in the race. She’s still behind, but only by a handful of lunge steps. The crowd gives a panicked shriek for Rebecca, who seems to understand their meaning—Kelly is coming. Flustered, she hastily jerks her bar back up and reattempts her final steps, but she’s off balance. To the horror of everyone in the coliseum, she drops her bar again. A second later, Kelly passes her and takes 2nd in the event.

When Rebecca takes 3rd, both women seem to understand that this was winner take all; that Kelly, not Rebecca, is about to be Gamesbound. So it’s a shock to everyone when MC reveals that the final ticket to Madison goes to… Rebecca Fuselier. For the fourth time in 10 minutes, the crowd dies and comes back to life. The average heartrate in this building is 210 bpm.

You can’t cut it any closer than this—when the leaderboard flashes up on the Jumbotron moments later, a single point separates the red line between 5th and 6th. You can guess what thoughts might be running through the mind of a 22 year-old rookie in this moment… but you’d be wrong about all of them. Rebecca’s first thought after hearing her name?

“Sh*t. I gotta learn how to swim.”

Sunday, 1:30pm: The broadcast team owes an apology. Man is out here doing things and getting no love from the camera crew in Event 5. This is sad for the viewers at home, because the speed of Jake’s burpee box get-overs in “Hardcore Parkour” really has to be seen to be believed.

In fairness, the broadcast team is trained to focus on those fighting on the bubble, and until just now, Jake didn’t appear to be in that fight. With one event remaining, it’s a good reminder of what 100 points can do.

Anything is possible on Day 3.

The History of the Mid-Atlantic CrossFit® Challenge

In 2012, we started a very small and the event was held inside an affiliate at CrossFit BWI with 35 teams competing. With the feedback we received we saw that we were on to something, and rented out a venue the following year. Each year it has grown to a competition that sees 150+ teams over 2 days of competition. The 2019 season will see teams and individuals compete, along with the addition of an online qualifier process that will be released in the coming months.

Our main mission is to give an unforgettable athlete experience, regardless of skill level or division. Even with the upcoming changes to the 2019 event, we plan on sticking to our core values of offering divisions for all skill-levels to compete.

One of those traditions that started in the first year of competition has been passing off a sword to the winning team. Each years winner has been etched into the blade, and we will continue that tradition in 2019...we just get to accompany that sword with a spot to the 2019 Reebok CrossFit Games®.
