Sailing North of Broken Gun Island on a light wind September afternoon was mesmerizing. The water was very clear. The thread algae appears to be overpowering the wild celery.

It started out windless, but turned into a perfect sailing Saturday on Lake Onalaska.

Thanks to those who have responded to this post. We have scheduled all of the available hosting Captains and their boats. If you are still interested, but could sail another time, please send a PM.

Sailed when you were a camper? Never been on a sailboat? Used to own a boat and miss it? Want your kids to have the experience of sailing? Or you just want to get on a sailboat? Here is your chance.

Members of the La Crosse Sailing Club are volunteering to take you out on their boats: cruisers (keelboats that carry up to six people) or day sailers (smaller boats that can carry up to four people). To help plan for the day, they are asking you to fill out the form. Someone will get back to you with the name of the person who will take you on the boat.

We will meet at the LaCrosse Sailing Club at 3600 Lakeshore Dr., Onalaska, at the North end of French Island at 1pm on July 25. If conditions are not right for taking you out, we will notify you by email or cell message before 11am.

Life jackets will be provided, unless you have your own that you prefer to wear. If you have a life jacket for your child, that would be great. Be sure to apply sunscreen and wear a hat. Bring a water bottle and a snack to share, if you would like. We have bottled water.

If it is a cool day, you may need a jacket.

The sail will last approximately two hours. We can arrange shorter times.
Following the sail, there will be a free social hour. At 4:30pm, the Sailing Club will host an Italian dinner, featuring Polito’s pizza, dessert, and drinks. Price for the dinner is $10/person, free for children under 12.

Community members are invited to come sail on Lake Onalaska on Saturday, July 25, 2026, 1pm. The name of your captain will be emailed to you before that day.
