Team Excellent Adventure - WA360

Team Excellent Adventure - WA360 Skipper Bill is back with Seventy48 finishers, Lee Warnecke and Sam Hendrix, to tackle the WA360. Ted Sweeney, also in the picture.

Relevant Experience:

Bill: Multiple voyages up and down the Washington and Oregon coast, and as far south as San Diego. Skippered two round trip voyages to Hawaii, including one solo (2007). Over fifty years, on and off, sailing in Puget Sound and the San Juan/Gulf Islands. Several marathons, solo hiked the Oregon and Washington PCT (2013). Mostly, though, just a retired geriatric who enjoys sitt

ing in my rocking chair, thinking about the good old days. My plan is to get my crew, Ted, to do all the work while I sip Mai-Tais. (Don’t tell him!) When we get to Ketchikan, we plan to buy a set of steak knives and tell our families we took second place. Ted: Forged in the ultra-competitive crucible of Seattle's Duck Dodge, Ted has literally months of sailing experience. Besides a handful of extended bicycle tours as well as several voyages around Puget Sound and the San Juans skippering his Catalina 25, Ted can boast of having won a hot dog eating contest in the tenth grade and being more than a third of the way through Moby Dick on audiobook. What he lacks in salt and experience Ted plans to make up for with heart, brawn, and trust in the wisdom and good will of his elders.

End of an era; the good ship, Pacific, that safely carried the crew of Team Excellent Adventure to finishes in two R2AKs and one WA360, plus many other adventures, is off to a new home. And what a great home it will be. She has gone to Ben Alvin, crew of our 2016 R2AK. Excellent home for some new adventures!

Skipper Bill here: My wife and I brought little Pacific back to Tacoma yesterday. Twelve hours under motor. Boring but beautiful, and no drama. Now I'm glued to the tracker, thoughts with the remaining boats struggling to get in.
Thank you for following our little adventure. Thank you for your encouragement along the way. Your comments and support really did make a difference. Some of you are participants, some family and friends and some total strangers, but you are all part of this little community of which I am proud to be a part.
I am especially grateful to my wife and family for putting up with all of this for so long. My sons-in-law, Sam and Lee, turned out to be ideal crew, and we got along well. These races tend to be slightly life altering for me. Perhaps this one will be for them as well.
At 76 years old, it is possible this will be my last adventure race. At least, my wife hopes so. Today, I'm too tired to disagree. Time will tell.
Once again, thank you for sharing this adventure with TEA.

Day 5: Slept in at Langley marina (until 5AM) and set off north for La Conner. Sam and Lee both made offerings on the oars and then a nice puff had us pacing with Luff of Bread. Past Goat Island, checkpoint 2, early to La Conner. There we met Grant and Denise for burgers and a brew.

Day 3: when the wind fails, take to the oars! Sam brought his 5x SEVENTY48 experience and was pure "destitutus ventis, remos adhibe" on the sliding seat to get us out of the South Sound. Rested at the Narrows marina and had wind when we got back on water. A full day of sailing lessons from Bill capped with the Team Excellent Adventure - WA360 classic "leak test" (whiskey shots) and falling stars from clear skies north of Seattle. πŸ₯ƒβœ¨πŸŒŠ
