PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL - MAUI'S LORI ROBERTSON PLACES 3RD IN 65s SINGLES AT THE ITF TENNIS INDIVIDUAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
May 17-24, 2025

Excepts from a candid conversation:

LM: Hey there! How did your singles 2nd round match go vs. 6th seed, Michelle Hill (AUS)?

LR: Lost first set 3-6 and ahead 5-0 when she retired due to heat stress. I’m bummed because I was on my way to beating her but I should be happy that I did just fine in...humid and hot conditions.

LM: Well done. How are you feeling? I read Carolyn Nichols’ blog post about the ambulances, wow. What are players doing to take care? Ice towels, chilled water spritzer bottles on court?

LR: My fitness level is good. I feel fine no problem. Gotta drink water with electrolytes all the time, all day and night long....the paramedics and trainers...say do not put cold water on your skin because the pores cannot let heat out when wet. But do cool down during changeovers using ice packs on the groin and head.

LM: How’d the 8 AM match go vs. Patricia Babcock (CAN)?

LR: I won that singles 6-2 6-0 and we won our doubles 6-2 6-4.
Tonight late, they (ITF) will send out tomorrow’s match times and the draws will be updated.

They don’t play all matches of a round on same day. So, I have a day off of singles today and right now I’m watching Betty Michel of France play a good German (player) in the round of 16. I will play winner in QF tomorrow. German is up 5-4 at the moment.

LM: How’d your QF match vs. Barbara Nowak (GER) go?

LR: ...really well. I was behind 2-5 first set and came back to win 7-6 6-4....made a few decisions (that didn’t go well) but a whole lot of good decisions and it worked out. I am pleased. Tomorrow is semifinal against Christine French (GRB) #2 seed.

LM: Wow, you’re doing it.

LR: Lost my singles today 6-2 6-3. I was spent.
There is no playoff unfortunately. They give bronze to both semi losers. Susan (Wright of USA) played very well (in the final). Christine (GRB) was outplayed. They are much more experienced than I am. I learned that Christine (French) won the 1000 level in Mallorca and in Turkey within the last 9 months. Susan (Wright) won the USA slam meaning she took gold at the clay, the grass, the hard and indoor hard in a single year.

By the end of this championship, Lori conveyed feeling good about the results and what she's been through. It is a meaningful journey and, she looks forward to the next time when she gets to step out on court with Christine French! Watch out Great Britain. Here comes Maui!

MAUI'S LORI ROBERTSON played the summer circuit of the ITF TENNIS MASTERS TOUR in 2025

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL - Her first tournament of the summer season was on clay in Florida in late March at the same site of the ITF Masters World Individual Championships “WORLDS” happening a couple of months later. In between, she went to various tennis destinations all over the US. It was an ambitious schedule.

Lori and Steve’s original plan had been to travel through Europe this summer; however, a hiking injury forced new ideas. Steve would heal at home on Maui while Lori would complete her first full year playing the Masters Tour in the US.

Lori has played a lot of national level tennis this summer, and it’s all been worth it as her performance at “Worlds” in Palm Beach Gardens, FL was outstanding. More on that in its own post. In the lead up months she’s adjusted her game to 4 locations in multiple time zones, completed matches on clay, hardcourt, indoor, and grass, went to five states, caught numerous airplane flights, visited their daughter, son, and friends, and stayed in hotels over the course of three months. Here we go in order of the first match (March) of a memorable masters tennis summer circuit to her last in California before the 2025 “Worlds” in May.
~
1st leg of Lori's summer circuit:
March 25-30, 2025
National Women’s Clay Courts (40, 50, 60, 70, 80)
LEVEL 1 - Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Center, Palm Beach Gardens, FL

Lori Robertson:
"Lost my consolation singles this morning and just won consolation doubles draw. Pau with this tournament which was 60s. I’m feeling healthy and strong. Couple days vacay and then fly to Alabama."

WS60+: Won R32. Lost R16 to 5th seed, Shelly Works in 3 sets. Works went on to upset the #1 seed in the QF.
Won a round in the consolation bracket. Lost to Gayle Prejean in the C-QF.

WD60+: Marianne Caplan, partner. Lost to Mosvold/Kaus R16.
Won Consolation FINALS vs. Markowitz/Kodsi.
