Hi! I'm Katie, and I'm the mom behind Horse Show Kids, both here on Facebook, and also over on Instagram, where you'll find us Instagram/.
I grew up on a farm, very involved in 4-H, riding and showing myself, some western, some saddle seat, and some hunt seat, including showing hunters at the intercollegiate level.
Once I had my first kids in my twenties, I quit having any time for horses altogether until our second child, my oldest daughter Jane became completely pony-obsessed by age four, and she took her first lesson around the time of her fifth birthday.
I spent the next ten extremely fun and fulfilling years as a very active barn and horse show mom, as Jane became an extremely active and successful rider on the local, regional, and A Pony Circuit across the southeast (she was very small for her age, so was able to stay on large ponies an extra long time ) Those were some of the most fun years of my life, and both she and I made friends in the horse world we maintain today. Several of her childhood riding besties have gone on to become some of the top national hunter and show jumper riders and trainers in the country.
My husband Jon and I have five kids, and they are quite widely spaced in age, so our oldest daughter Jane is now in her late 20s, while our youngest, our daughter Georgia, is now fourteen years old. Georgia is just as horse-crazy as her big sister Jane, but got various reasons, she got a much later start with riding. She's now been taking lessons for about twenty months, and is progressing wonderfully.
She competed in very small, local shows in beginner hunter classes on the fiat last summer, and had a terrific time, plus learned a great deal. She's working hard this winter with her trainer on a lovely young Paint mare named Doc's Classic Darling to be ready to move up to considerably more competitive classes with Darling in the show season ahead.
As for me, I'm loving being a barn mom and horse show mom again after a break of a few years. There's nothing I enjoy more than a day at the show grounds supporting my girls as they compete - win or lose. Because either way, we always have fun, and there are always lessons to be learned.
