On this date in Vol Football History, September 8, 1990, Johnny Majors lead the Vols into Starkville to face the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Tony Thompson rushed for 248 yards and two touchdowns as Tennessee beat Mississippi State, 40-7, in a conference opener. Leading, 17-7, and on the Mississippi State 32-yard line in the second quarter, Tennessee used a trick play for a touchdown. Guard Bernard Dafney picked up the snap, which the center had put on the ground, and ran around left end for a touchdown.

On this date in Vol Football History, September 7, 1996 the Vols faced off against the UCLA Bruins under the lights at Neyland Stadium. Peyton Manning ran for 2 TDs and threw for 2 more, a 6 yard pass to Eric Lane and a 53 yard strike to Joey Kent. The most electrifying play of the game was an 83 yard punt return TD by Terry Fair to ice the Bruins in the 4th quarter. The 35-20 win on CBS primetime started the Vols off 2-0 early in the ‘96 campaign.

Big Doug Atkins from Humboldt, Tennessee. At 6-8, 260 pounds Doug was a massive individual on the football team in the early 1950’s. He originally enrolled at UT to play basketball but also lettered 3 years in track while making his mark on the gridiron. In fact Atkins was runner-up in the 1952 SEC high jump. His 6’-6” achievement was 25th best in the world that year.

On this date in Vol Football History, September 6, 1997, the Vols traveled to Pasadena to take on the UCLA Bruins at the Rose Bowl stadium. The Big Orange charged to an early lead with a Leonard Little safety and an interception return for a TD by Cory Gaines. The Vols offense got in on the fun with Peyton Manning throwing TD passes to Marcus Nash and Jeremaine Copeland. Tennessee would go on to win 30-24. UCLA would go on to win the Pac Ten championship and the Vols would win the SEC championship.

On this date in Vol Football History, September 5th, 1998, Tennessee defeated the Orangemen of Syracuse 34-33 in The Carrier Dome. Tee Martin threw for 2 TD passes and Jamal Lewis ran for 2 more touchdowns in the win. Jeff Hall connected on a 27 yard FG at the end of the game for the game winning FG. The win set the pace for a 13-0 National Championship run for the Vols.

On this date in Vol Football History , September 4, 1999, Tee Martin completed 14 passes on 21 attempts for 264 yards and 2 TD’s including 2 TD throws to Cedrick Wilson while Jamal Lewis rushed for 159 yards and 3 TD’s as Tennessee defeated the Wyoming Cowboys 42-17 in front of 107,597 at Neyland Stadium.

The inspirational leader of the 2005 SBC Cotton Bowl championship squad, Kevin Burnett made his final season as a Vol his best.
The Carson, Calif., native was elected team co-captain for the second consecutive year and was named a first-team All-American and All-SEC selection after finishing second on the team with 120 tackles and third in the SEC with 9.2 tackles per game. He tied for the team lead for the team with seven special-teams tackles during the season.
Burnett had a fast start to the 2004 season with eight tackles and a fumble recovery in the win over UNLV and was later named SEC Defensive Player of the Week after setting a new career-high with 16 tackles (10 solo) in a 30-28 win over Florida. He led the Vols with six tackles against Texas A&M in the 2005 SBC Cotton Bowl.
During his four years at Rocky Top, Burnett amassed 264 total tackles, 23 TFLs, eight sacks, eight pass breakups, recovered three fumbles and forced three more.
A three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection, Burnett received his master's degree in sport management in the Fall of 2004.
