Our Parent Tot classes focus on introduction and acclimation to water. Babies from one month to 3.5 years attend these classes with a parent or other guardian (grandparents, aunts, nannies, etc....). Not only does it teach the children to love the water so that when they are developmentally able to swim, they will learn very quickly and easily, it teaches parents how to interact with their child in the water so that they are encouraging the types of skills their child will need to be able to swim at the earliest age they can.
For example, many parents these days when asked, "How do you interact with your child in water" will say they use Puddle Jumpers, arm floats, etc... mostly out of fear and lack of knowledge. Yes, these devices keep your child from drowning, but there's something that works better!!!!! - Having a parent in the water with the child. While we understand a parent's need to make sure their child is safe, putting them in these types of floats all the time will give the child a false sense of what their bodies can do in the water. It creates an artificial situation that doesn't carry over to swimming at all. Flotation devices such as these train the child's brain to be vertical in the water rather than horizontal. We want child to be most comfortable in the horizontal swimming position... not the vertical drowning position. Often it will take us an extra few days just to get kids over their fear of being horizontal in the water. We know the reason is overuse of flotation devices. They actually make it harder for a child to learn to swim once they are developmentally ready. They become like a security blanket and without them, your child is at an even higher risk for drowning, because they don't know what they are capable of doing without the floaties.
This class is also a wonderful way to bond with your new baby! The younger, the better!
We also do lessons for Beginners, Advanced Beginners, Intermediates and Swim Team Prep.
