Is a Vertical Side Kick Really What Poomsae Is About?

Poomsae competition is growing, and that is good for Taekwondo.

But as a Traditional Taekwondo practitioner, there is one trend that I find difficult to understand.

Why are so many Taekwondo practitioners trying so hard to perform a vertical side kick?

A side kick may sometimes need to be high. There may be a need to kick an opponent’s face, or to respond to an opponent who jumps high while attacking.

But that is very different from trying to make the leg almost completely vertical simply because higher is considered better.

When practitioners spend countless hours forcing flexibility, struggling to raise the leg higher and higher, and even risking injury just to achieve a vertical position, I have to ask:

What are we really trying to develop?

A side kick is a martial arts technique.

Its purpose is not to show how far the leg can be raised.

A proper side kick should have accuracy, power, balance, speed, control, and effectiveness.

The height of the kick should be determined by the target and the situation.

It should not become a goal by itself.

When the vertical position becomes more important than power, balance, proper body alignment, and effectiveness, the original meaning of the technique begins to change.

That is what concerns me as a Traditional Taekwondo practitioner.

Poomsae is not gymnastics.

Poomsae is not a flexibility contest.

Poomsae should represent Taekwondo.

Poomsae should demonstrate real Taekwondo technique—its power, precision, balance, control, spirit, and martial purpose.

If the situation requires a high side kick, then the kick should be high.

But if there is no martial purpose behind making the side kick almost vertical, we should seriously ask why so much effort is being put into doing it.

The question is simple:

Are we practicing the side kick as a Taekwondo technique—or simply trying to see how high we can lift the leg?

Thank you to everyone who believed in us!

The **3rd GTTF Global Summit and the 1st GTTF Global Championships**, held in Manila, Philippines, concluded with tremendous success—far beyond expectations.
The journey to this event was not easy. We faced outside pressure, threats, disrespect, and repeated attempts to interfere with our progress and damage the credibility of GTTF. Because of this, some people hesitated to attend, while others were genuinely concerned about taking part. Some may even have expected the event to fail or become an insignificant gathering.
The result was exactly the opposite.
We overcame every doubt and every obstacle. Through this event, we clearly demonstrated the strength, unity, and growing international standing of GTTF.
GTTF was not created for personal gain, nor was it formed through outside pressure or influence. We are a voluntary global community united by a clear mission: **to preserve and restore Traditional Taekwondo**. Because of that shared purpose, no threat, pressure, or interference can bring us down.
The challenges only made us stronger. We turned crisis into opportunity and transformed outside pressure into energy for growth.
**We may be shaken, but we will not collapse.
We may fall, but we will always rise again.
And we will never abandon our mission or direction because of outside pressure.**
This historic success would not have been possible without the committed leadership of **Chairman Jennifer Baltasar and the GTTF Philippines team**. They did not surrender to pressure or intimidation. They welcomed the global GTTF family with outstanding facilities, sincere hospitality, and the highest level of respect, showing the world the dignity and standard of GTTF.
On behalf of GTTF, I extend my deepest respect and gratitude to Chairman Jennifer Baltasar, the organizing committee, staff members, and volunteers.
I also sincerely thank our dedicated GTTF leaders and participants from around the world who trusted us and traveled great distances despite the difficult circumstances. Your presence was more than participation—it was a powerful expression of courage, commitment, and belief in the future of GTTF.
Of course, we do not claim that everything was perfect. We learned important lessons, and we will correct what needs to be improved. Next year, we will build an even stronger, more organized, and more distinguished global event.
Through Manila 2026, GTTF became stronger, more united, and more mature.
**Be proud of GTTF.**
We proved our value not through words, but through results.
We will not stop.
We will not step back.
Together, we will move higher and farther.
**We look forward to seeing you again in Italy from November 22–28, 2027.**
