FACT of the WEEK: The Atlantic Ghost Crab can mate throughout the summer in North Carolina, but mature females tend to ovulate in April and again in August. Males and females reach sexual maturity at about 1 year old, or approximately 33% of their lifespan. Unlike other crabs, they can mate when their shells are hard. Finally, you're lucky to see the act occur on the beach, considering this is usually done in the privacy of the male's burrow.
