“Here come the birds!”, announcer Tom Dowd proclaimed as we screamed down the iced-up wooden chute at the 35th US National Toboggan Championships at Camden Snow Bowl. This was the 7th running of the Flock, once all-pink … and for the last four years resembling a big pink puff pastry with yellow creme filling. Whether we honk or quack, we are all birds-of—a-feather and on the same (higher) flight path.
Always grateful for the opportunity to go “chuting” with this gutsy & fun group of women, adapting to whatever Mother Nature or Father Physics throws at us. One flamingo was sidelined after knee surgery and two others had their wings-in-slings from ice & slope encounters six days earlier, while three new birds were indoctrinated into the Order of the Flock. Much love for our sled sherpa’s, boosters, and local supporters who keep us from premature landings. Always fun to roll into town and see Hannaford flying our colors! A highlight of the weekend was having livestream the event, with family from Maui-Seattle-San Francisco-Florida—NYC watching our antics from start to finish. The commentary in our group chat was epic.
How’d we do? A Flying Flock was thrilled to qualify both sleds for the 4-Person Finals, placing #22 and #43 in the top 50, out of 203 4P teams that entered. Our fastest qualifying run was only 134 milliseconds behind the fastest all women team, equal to half a blink-of-an-eye, or one-seventh of a resting heartbeat. Yep. We applaud the Top Boggan - 4 Ice Cougars for taking home the Fastest All-Female’s trophy, and look forward to flying in tighter formation next year.
