The sparkles stayed on (our faces) and in (our hearts!) With the Womens Wave dip in Casco Bay, our training officially started for the 2027 US Nat’l Toboggan Championships at Camden Snow Bowl. International Women’s Day provided the perfect opportunity to bring some of the flock together with ~1,600 exuberant & intrepid women. Our feathers might have gotten a little wet & frosty in the 36 degree water but the energy & vibration felt at Willard Beach wrapped us in warmth & reassurance that we are not alone in this cold, dark, stormy world. The dancing did not hurt!

Full disclosure … I did not dip, as I’m fresh off spine surgery and under doctor’s orders. And no, this was not a result of flying down an icy wooden toboggan chute at 39mph. Lol. I’ve done crazier things in my lifetime that have given me some “souvenirs!” Am now fixed up for future shenanigans.

The quaint and quintessentially Maine Abigail's Inn in Camden welcomed the Flock back this year with impeccable hospitality, comfort & charm! David Parlin & Steven Wells greeted us with warmth & kindness, once again lending their living room for pre-race “training” with our coaches … and jumping on ‘Birdie2’ with their beautiful King Charles Cavaliers to capture a cherished memory. Waiting for us in our artfully-furnished rooms was a bottle of wine in a fun winter-motif bag Dave made, adorned with a toboggan ornament. Steven served his signature “to-sled-for” lobster turnovers for our Saturday Night Flocking with boosters, a perfect treat after a chilly day at the races. With their care & consideration, it goes without saying that the proprietors of Abigails Inn have earned a permanent place in the Flock Hall of Fame!

Team member Stacy Frizzle Edgerton deserves a special mention for her hard work, thoughtfulness, and commitment to our feathered menagerie. Even with her wing in a sling, this sled goddess found time & energy to pull together team-donated goodies for gift bags in appeciation for our hosts et moi! Stacy was our MVP last weekend, flight-checking us on the starting platform, settling up & tearing down camp, making a charcuterie board … while always shining a bright light and flashing a big smile! We love you Stacy!

“Here come the birds!”, announcer Tom Dowd proclaimed as we screamed down the iced-up wooden chute at the 35th US National Toboggan Championships at Camden Snow Bowl. This was the 7th running of the Flock, once all-pink … and for the last four years resembling a big pink puff pastry with yellow creme filling. Whether we honk or quack, we are all birds-of—a-feather and on the same (higher) flight path.

Always grateful for the opportunity to go “chuting” with this gutsy & fun group of women, adapting to whatever Mother Nature or Father Physics throws at us. One flamingo was sidelined after knee surgery and two others had their wings-in-slings from ice & slope encounters six days earlier, while three new birds were indoctrinated into the Order of the Flock. Much love for our sled sherpa’s, boosters, and local supporters who keep us from premature landings. Always fun to roll into town and see Hannaford flying our colors! A highlight of the weekend was having livestream the event, with family from Maui-Seattle-San Francisco-Florida—NYC watching our antics from start to finish. The commentary in our group chat was epic.

How’d we do? A Flying Flock was thrilled to qualify both sleds for the 4-Person Finals, placing #22 and #43 in the top 50, out of 203 4P teams that entered. Our fastest qualifying run was only 134 milliseconds behind the fastest all women team, equal to half a blink-of-an-eye, or one-seventh of a resting heartbeat. Yep. We applaud the Top Boggan - 4 Ice Cougars for taking home the Fastest All-Female’s trophy, and look forward to flying in tighter formation next year.

CAMDEN — It's hard to believe that in 1991 only a few hundred locals attended the first organized traditional wood toboggan race in the country. Sports Illustrated called it, "a cross between an Alice in Wonderland costume ball and a family reunion..."

How do we train [for toboggan racing?] Last year I jumped off a 30 foot cliff, this year I paddled with an outrigger canoe club on the south shore of Maui.

What does flying down an icy chute have to do with flying across the water, you ask? For both, the goal is to strive for maximum “stillness at speed.” When in the flow, you’re not riding ON the craft — you’re moving AS the craft.
