We want every student out there marching with us. This is one of the best days of the year, and the more of us walking together, the louder we are.

📅 Saturday, September 19
⏰ Meet by 9:15 AM, parade steps off at 10:00
📍 Kirkwood High School parking lot on Dougherty Ferry Road. Look for our group, we are entry #22.
👕 Full uniform with your belt, or TKD pants with your school t-shirt

Every student is invited, and all Leadership Club students should plan to be there.

Tyler wrote “Smore the Stealthy Shinobi,” a story about a little narwhal who learns how to be brave. 🐳💙

He is in elementary school. He wrote a whole book. 🤯

And in his author’s note, he shares why: he loves spreading kindness. 💛 He helps beginner students at the studio. He puts together supply bags with snacks and toiletries for people who need them, because it makes them smile. 😊

We saw it all summer too. During summer camp, Tyler helped the new kids figure things out over and over again, and nobody ever had to ask him. He just noticed and stepped in. 🙌

Now every kid who reads his book gets a little braver too. 🥋✨

That is a big deal at any age. At his? Incredible.

A child cannot be talked into discipline. They have to experience order until it becomes theirs.

At Master Kim’s, that happens in the smallest ways.

They know where to stand. They know how class begins. They hear one instruction. They do one thing. They miss. They reset. They go again.

A year ago I answered for him.
Not on purpose. It just happened faster than he did.
The waitress would ask what he wanted. I would say it. The doctor would ask where it hurt. I would explain. Someone would ask his name and he would look at me and I would fill the space before it got awkward for him.
I called it helping.
Then we were at a birthday party and another kid asked if he wanted to play, and he looked at me, and I realized I had nothing to give him. I could not do that one for him.
That is what got me. Not the shyness. The looking.
Because I am not going to be at the middle school lunch table. I am not going to be there when a coach is unfair, or when a friend crosses a line, or when someone asks him to do something he doesn't want to do.
I did not need him to be loud. I needed him to know he had a voice at all.
Here is what a year looked like.
Answering an instructor so the back row could hear him.
Introducing himself to a partner without checking my face first.
Standing in front of the class to demonstrate, terrified, doing it anyway.
Small stuff. I know how small it looks.
Last month we were at the pediatrician and she asked him how he had been feeling.
I had my mouth open. Old habit.
He answered her himself.
I sat there in that little plastic chair and almost cried over a sentence about a sore throat.
Because it was his.
