Meet Alexandra Johnston, CYT 200.
Her dad was a Bikram yogi. He brought her to hot yoga in high school, almost twenty years ago — and in college in the Bay Area, a casual introduction turned into an obsession. She practiced nearly every day for three years, and by 2014 she was teaching.
Over the years since, she's taught Hatha, Power Vinyasa, Yin, and Kids Yoga, and completed her 200-hour training four separate times — in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022. She spent five years managing and teaching at studios here on the Eastside, and today teaches Yin and does personal training in Kirkland.
"Yoga roots us to our feet and grounds us in the rhythm of our breath. We become a witness to the mind's arising fears, and we learn to use the breath to regulate the body's reactions."
Walk into her class and expect a focus on alignment of the bones and engagement of the muscles. She tends to start slow, with holds that emphasize technique. Slow, she'll remind you, doesn't mean easy.
Right now she's drawn to lunges — any variation. She loves the balance and strength they demand, and the way a lunge opens the front of the hips.
And she takes her time in savasana. A teacher once told her that her practice would deepen if she was always the last one on the mat as the room emptied. She took it literally for years — and now she can't help but soak up the stillness after everyone else has gone.
Off the mat: she competes in CrossFit, plays beach volleyball all summer, cooks nearly all her own food, and lives in a tiny house.
We're honored to have Alexandra sharing her practice with this community.
