The University of Rhode Island Men’s Rugby Club prides itself on a unique team culture that breeds excellence, camaraderie, and leadership. We compete in Division 2 within the New England Collegiate Rugby Conference. The team carried around fifty-five players, coming from a wide range of athletic backgrounds. We have players with years of rugby under their belt, but the majority of our players hav

e never touched a rugby ball before the first day of practice. Our players consist of former American football, lacrosse, wrestling, track, soccer, and hockey athletes. After learning the basic rules of the game and team philosophies on the development side, players then compete for playing time on the 1st XV and 2nd XV side, which are run in a similar fashion to a varsity and JV squad in other sports. However, because of the number and skill of the team's members, there is frequent overlap between the 1st and 2nd XVs. The team plays both a fall and spring season, and between the 1st XV, 2nd XV, and Development sides. No position on the 1st and 2nd XV sides is ever permanent; positions are up for grabs every day and every week by showcasing their aptitude for the sport, abilities and desire. Off the field, the University of Rhode Island Men’s Rugby Club has a team culture that creates friends for life, a fact reflected in our incredibly supportive and loyal alumni base, many of whom return for games at URI or wherever else the team travels. http://web.uri.edu/clubsports/mrug/

A tip o' da scrum cap to URI Men's Rugby for a solid victory last weekend. Putting forth a furvent defensive effort, primarily of their own making throughout the first half, the boys proved once again that the better team takes control in the second half and put up 3 tries while conceding NOTHING. Great job by Coaches Brooks, Easton and Barry calming the crew down and reinforcing their strengths, including a potent forwards going forward attack. Solid step up from the previous week's debacle.

Rhody Rugby opened up the fall 15’s season with a big WIN against UCONN. In a back and forth game, the boys showed great resolve and resilience, even being down two men with yellow cards at one point. Tries were scored by Jack Sullivan (Converted by Joe Hall), Captain Andrew Reicher, and Rich King in the final minute to give us the 17-14 win. Lots to improve and build on but this victory makes it URI’s first 1-0 start ever in the Liberty Conference. We want more. Back to work.

What a week! Last night the boys wrapped up a great week of practice/preseason at YMCA Camp Fuller. This preseason camp idea came from the late Mike Traynor and was established in 2017. The 2023 Rams carried on that tradition and look to take on Boston College at Alumni Stadium on 9/10 (Sunday.) A side game will kick off at 5:45! Also our first home game will be 9/16 against UCONN. Kick off at 3:30. Hope to see y’all there!

URI ALUMNI GAME ‼️

Hey all, we’ve hit the ground running with the spring season after a very competitive fall! The official date for the Rhody Rugby Alumni Game will be on APRIL 29th, 2023!! This will also serve as a Senior Day for players on their last semester. We will be playing as much rugby as the old boys can handle with drinks and food to follow after at a TBD location. Any questions feel free to message the club page. Hope to see as many people there as possible!! Spread the word!!

Been an up and down season but URI will be taking on Columbia in a Liberty Rugby Conference Challenge Series Bowl Game. This is a big rematch of a very close regular season game. The boys are fired up and ready to go!!
