“What I’m trying to emphasize in class is that our practice isn’t just about reacting to a single moment in time. It’s about staying soft, adapting continuously as the situation evolves, so you move fluidly in real time, not from a frozen snapshot, but from a dynamic response.”

When I was asked how I advanced in this art, I realized something over time. I received training and guidance from Grandmaster John Perkins, high-level practitioners, and my peers—but I also came to understand that the training itself was my instructor. I grew by trusting the process and seeking guidance when needed. I still follow that today.”

The Four Stages of Guided Chaos Learning

1. External Stage — Visual & Thought Driven

This is where almost everyone begins.

Students rely mostly on:
• their eyes
• their thinking
• their judgment

They are asking:
• What is the attacker doing?
• What should I do next?
• What technique should I use?

Because of this their movement often becomes:
• stiff
• hesitant
• delayed

They are deciding what to do instead of responding naturally.

Movement is mostly driven by the eyes.

2. Contact Stage — Tactile Awareness

Now something important changes.

As Perkins emphasized:

Strike and make contact.

Once contact happens, the body receives real information through touch:
• pressure
• direction
• tension
• imbalance

The student begins to feel the opponent instead of judging the opponent.

Now the Guided Chaos principles begin guiding movement:
• Sensitivity
• Balance
• Looseness
• Unity of movement

Responses begin to come from physical feedback rather than mental decision-making.

3. Internalized Stage — Principle Guided Movement

With enough training the principles become internalized.

The student no longer thinks about:
• techniques
• step-by-step decisions
• specific movements

Instead:
• the principles guide the body
• responses come through touch and structure
• movement becomes free and adaptable

This produces:
• freedom of action
• adaptability
• continuous attack on the attacker

The body works as one integrated unit.

This is similar to learning to drive: eventually the details disappear and the action becomes natural.

4. Natural Stage — Spontaneous Action

At the highest level something even deeper happens.

The practitioner is no longer consciously thinking about:
• the opponent
• techniques
• even the principles themselves

The principles have become part of the person’s natural movement.

Action becomes:
• spontaneous
• fluid
• immediate

The practitioner simply acts within the moment.

Balance, sensitivity, looseness, and adaptability are no longer things the person tries to apply — they are already present in the movement.

G.C. Core idea & focus :
Reality leads the way. Guided chaos reinforces that.”
Reality is the guide. Guided Chaos is the training system that builds the ability to operate inside that reality.

A Very Simple Way to Explain All Four Stages

You could tell students this:

First you use your eyes.
Then you learn to feel through contact.
Then the principles guide your movement.
Eventually the movement becomes completely natural.
