I was fortunate to get a very mature turkey on April 15th. This is my fifth year hunting those majestic (although ugly) fowl. I have been taking only one per season because I did not want to pressure the population too much. However, because over the last 5-7 years I have really seen the population grow. I like to think it is due to mine and my neighbors habitat management over the last few years. That said, after seeing the great male populations at my place and feeling the future was pretty secure, I was considering taking another Tom for the season if I could find a mature bird. Plus, I wanted to wait until after peak breeding because the later in the season the more challenging it is (IYKYK). Then about 2 weeks after taking O’l Split Tail, a bigger boy started hanging out as well as a pair of Jakes I call “The Twins”. The turkeys have all but stopped gobbling (off roost), so I decided if I could get him to come in, and he was a really mature bird, and it felt right, I would take a second turkey this season. And wow, what an adventure getting this bird. I could not get him in but was able to get a dominant hen to come in which lured him close. Then The Twins decided to get into the mix and that fired him up. I got to watch quite a lot of action on Saturday morning, May 2 that resulted an end to a fantastic season. This old bird was never given a name but he is certainly worthy of one. He was 3-4 pounds heavier than any of my previous Toms and sported an 11.5 inch beard. You don’t see them that big and that old very often. Hopefully have a video pieced together soon that will show the highlights of the morning.
