Sometimes, as a fisherman, you have to assess what it is you are doing. One day this bait works great, the next day it wont catch a thing. We have to change and adapt, and as a fishing guide, we have to be able to adapt on the fly, and adapt again, if need be, and also eventually be right.
I am a trophy fisherman. And since trophy fish dont come easy, it means I have to not give in to the temptation to just go with the flow. 4lbs, 6lbs, even 8lbs striper are NOT trophy class fish. They are fun and badass to catch but in the end, they are going into a freezer bag, not on the wall.
I only get two kinds of clients. The anglers who want to put one on the wall or take pictures with a beast and release it, that dont care that much about a bag of fillets, or folks who just want to catch fish, and have fun, and take a couple bags of fillets home.
These two types of trips require totally different approaches. Until recently I disregarded anything but the trophy end of it. That is my nature. The other guides on the lake know I dont flock to the boats, and drop on the shooling fish, even when they are good sized fish.
I must be doing something right because I have tons of 5 star reviews on all platforms.
No offense to those guides, but when I see 3 or 5 or 12 boats in an area, splashers and thumpers going, I see a "school" of guides. There is no trophy striper near them. Maybe a 9 pounder or two, who still feed with the schools, but that 15+ pounder doesnt have a school anymore. He eats 2lbs bass, and shad the size of Subway sandwiches. He is sitting in 40+ f.o.w. but only 3 tail kicks from a 10-20ft shelf where he can dart up and eat and be back in the deep in a matter of seconds.
How do I know? On Texoma me, my family and clients have boated 11 fish over 15lbs. 2 of them over 20lbs. At least 100 fish over 30 inches long And that is just on Texoma. I have 8 striper over 30lbs on the wall. From PK, Whitney, 43lbs from Beaver Lake, 29 and 17lbs from Lake Lanier, and my father mounted them. Which means we took out their guts. Those fish did not have 30 bait tank shad in their stomachs. They dont eat bait sized shad. They had 1+lbs sand bass, large mouth, crappie, lake drum, small carp, and HUGE gizzard shad in their guts.
In 2015 Texoma flooded, like it did last year. 2016 was tough for me chasing just bigs, 2017, too, but in 2018 we caught an 18 and a 16 pounder. In 2022, I won the Texoma Striper Challenge. But instead of repeating the struggle I had in 2016 and 17, I am evolving, and hopefully keying in on something I missed back then...
For 2026 and probably most of 2027, I am hunting two things. One, a trophy white bass, and two, the trophy striper who feeds on schooling white bass.
That means if you want to go out and drop shad in the deep and haul in some pretty nice striper, with JC McCullough, Stripercat Glen, Sparky, Scarberry or Texoma Striper Company (Cole gets my vote for best "Striper" guide on the lake) and catch a limit of striper, I'm not your guide. I am technically not a striper guide. I'm a trophy guide. Their boats can handle ten ppl each and Cole and Sparky, have multiple boats. Striper Express on the Texas side, are lures only, and alot like me, only I'm just one guy. They have multiple guides.
If you want to catch eater sized striper and catch white bass two at a time on my double jigs, or on topwater, and have the chance of boating a true "Trophy" sized Striper, Large Mouth Bass, or white/sand bass, on quality light gear. Topwater and casting double jigs, and a little trolling in certain prime areas in between spots, that is what I am doing until October. Juglining for catfish on the 6hr trips can yield trophies, too. The 69lbs Blue Cat hanging in the Catfish Bay Mini Mart, is one of mine.
