Thibaut Courtois couldn't do much to prevent Joselu Mato from scoring a penalty in Real Madrid's 4-1 win away at Alaves last Saturday, but Los Blancos and returning head coach Carlo Ancelotti are able to relax somewhat in the knowledge that the Belgian is between the sticks.
Courtois has won Real Madrid points on multiple occasions with his saves, and gone are the times where Los Merengues looked shaky in goal following the departure of Iker Casillas back in 2015.
In fact, the 29-year-old's records at Real Madrid have been staggering, particularly since October 2019. Courtois appeared to suffer a lack of confidence at the beginning of his Real Madrid career, but he bounced back and has been one of the best goalkeepers in world football.
Since October 2019, Courtois has conceded the fewest goals in any of the major European leagues (43 goals in 67 games). Only Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak is anywhere near Courtois, having conceded 49 goals in 70 games.
In the last 29 games he has played in LaLiga Santander, only Levante and Sevilla were able to score more than one goal past him, and in almost half of those matches he kept a clean sheet.
When looking at the time from October 2019 to now, Courtois is also the goalkeeper who has been able to keep the most clean sheets in their leagues: 33, compared to 32 for Manchester City's Ederson.
Ancelotti now has a goalkeeping fortress in his second reign at the club, something which he lacked last time.
Courtois will start his fourth season with Real Madrid with his mind set on winning the trophy which has so far eluded him: the Champions League.
But, after signing a new contract with Los Blancos, he will have another four years to try and win Europe's most desired trophy.
