This little nudibranch feeds on stinging hydroids. But instead of simply digesting those stinging cells, it can steal them, stash them in its cerata, and use them for its own defense.

As daylight breaks across Maui, we’re beginning to see the extent of what Hurricane Lowell left behind.

Here at Mā‘alaea Harbor, many of the boat owners spent the night looking out for one another, helping with snapped lines, checking on boats, and lending a hand wherever it was needed. It’s one of the things we love most about our little harbor community: when the weather gets rough, everyone pitches in.

Our boat came through the night well, and we’re grateful to see her still sitting safely in her slip this morning. We’re continuing to assess the harbor and surrounding areas as daylight reveals more.

But our thoughts are very much with our friends, neighbors, and fellow ocean communities on Kauaʻi and Niʻihau. The reports coming out of those islands are heartbreaking, and we can only imagine what they are waking up to this morning.

We’ll keep taking things one step at a time here in Mā‘alaea and keep you posted as we know more. 💙
