I found this recording on my phone a month or so after John had passed away. I was kind of keeping it to myself, and would listen to it every now and then, but I’m sure most of you would like to hear one of his famous speeches one more time. There are a couple pictures I took off FB. If they were yours, thank you. - Lou

One year today .... 💔

I've been going through all the pictures and videos I have from over the years, and came across this one that I never posted. It's only a minute and a half long, and if you watch until the end, there is a short clip of John.

I'll give you a quick rundown of what this was about. We always had a good time with the customers, especially when it came to the monthly pool. Jimmy Hughes, who was a fan favorite when he was on board, took an early lead on the 1st of September 2014 with a decent sized fish, however, while I was walking around the deck recording the clips for this video, someone caught a bigger fluke and knocked Jimmy off the board. That's the reason I never posted it. Like I said, there is a quick clip of John at the end.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been trying to think of what to write to inform every one of the sale of the boat, and the closing of Captain John’s Fishing & Cruising in Keyport. In all honesty, I have been dreading this moment and putting it off because I am having a very hard time saying goodbye to John. Perhaps it has been easier to hide from the finality of it all by maybe ignoring reality, but as difficult as this is, I guess it is time. With that being said, I am just going to type away…

Each season we would look forward to bringing the boat back to the dock in the Keyport. The community was always very welcoming and we appreciated all the people who would take time out of their day to come down to say hello. With that time of year approaching, I must sadly announce that following the untimely passing of Captain John on January 29th, the decision was made to sell the boat and close the business.

Whether you sailed with us once or became a regular over the years, I can not say thank you enough. Your business was very much valued and appreciated. One of the first things John said to me when I started working for him was, "I don't care how much you know about fishing. What I care about is how you treat our customers. Always be polite, courteous and treat everyone with respect." That's was John, and I hope that is how he and his business will be remembered. No one did it better!

In closing, I would like to say, from the bottom of my heart, and on behalf of the entire Captain John crew, both past and present, Thank You for 29 great years of business. - Lou

A few years ago the sun got to me, and I had to sit up in the pilot house for a while. John took my shirt and hat, and went down on deck and impersonated me for a few drifts. Everyone got a kick out of it. - Lou

I am writing this with an extremely heavy heart. Today, Captain John as most of you knew him by, passed away. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Lou. I have worked for John for close to 25 years. Over those years we built a friendship and a bond that I thought would last well into our senior years, but sadly, it has been cut short. To say I am devastated would be an understatement. I really don't think John knew how many people's lives he touched in a positive way. From the amount of calls and texts that I have received, to all of the social media posts I have read, it is overwhelming evident that he had such a positive effect on so many people's lives.
For me, John was more than Captain John, he was more than a boss or friend, he was a brother. John and I would often talk and reminisce about how over the years, we shared so many of life's events together. Everything from laughs to tears, births to deaths. From the highest of points, to the lowest moments life can throw at you, I could count on him to be there. Now, I must come to terms with the fact that we will never speak again or share another part of this journey together. Today, a part of me died. Heartbroken....
