Every September we hear the same question from Key Biscayne parents: is my child ready for jiu-jitsu?
Here is the honest answer. Readiness has almost nothing to do with size, athleticism or temperament. It has to do with whether your child has energy, attention or confidence that needs somewhere to go.
And here is what surprises most parents: the traits that make you hesitate are usually the reasons to start. The kid who cannot sit still is not a bad fit for the mats. He is the kid who benefits most. In a randomized study of an 11-week beginner martial arts course, children showed measurable gains in self-regulation and rated self-control as more valuable afterwards (Ng-Knight et al., Developmental Psychology). Earlier school-based research found the same pattern in cognitive and emotional self-regulation (Lakes and Hoyt, Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology).
Run the checklist. If two or more sound like your child, that is your answer. Come try a class with us, watch from the side, ask questions. No uniform and no commitment needed for the first one.
Save this for later, or send it to the parent who has been thinking about it all summer. Link in bio.
