Another little change of plans for this season (and future seasons). The vessel Underdog wasn’t for sale as I had planned to hold on to it for a bit while deciding what to do about a “retirement boat”. However, I received a good offer which included a rather hassle free transaction so I decided to let it go sooner than planned.

Will always have great memories from that boat. It was certainly a fish catching machine, and fished extremely well in all conditions. Especially loved having the lake to myself several days each year whenever the entire rest of the fleet cancelled and we were still able to fish very productively on that boat. We took great care of it and it took great care of us, providing safety, and endless reliability to make long runs anywhere on the lake we wanted to go.

For the limited number of guests who were scheduled to fish with me this summer, I will still be fishing and we will be on Captain Mark’s vessel Dark Horse.

Meanwhile, we are also still taking additional reservations for fishing with Captain Mark on the Dark Horse.

📣📣📣📣IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT📣📣📣📣

I hope everyone's 2026 is off to a great start! After the 2025 season, I intended to announce my retirement from the charter fishing business. After many (16 to be exact) seasons of incredible success, I am beyond happy with everything I accomplished. In short, I went from fulfilling a dream of taking people fishing and showing them what Lake Michigan has to offer, to quickly turning Slam Dunk Charters LLC into something bigger than I ever anticipated.
My competitive nature drove me to wanting to be the best at this. This meant providing the best customer service, the best experience on board the boat, and consistently dominating the catch year-after-year. It didn’t take long until I accomplished my ultimate goal: differentiate myself so well that my only competition is myself. Nobody lived this with me better than my longtime friend and deckhand, Chris Klar. We always strived to compete with ourselves by making every day, every season, every experience, better than the last, for the sake of our charter guests. Chris had been a staple on the boat until he unexpectedly passed away in the fall of 2024. And although there had been many times throughout the years that I ran solo without him, continuing on last season knowing he’d never be back on board the boat was difficult to say the least.
Ultimately, I owe everything to all of those who have supported me and helped along the way. I’m thankful for the many friends I’ve met and had a chance to fish with throughout the years. There’s always been some fantastic people surrounding me, especially my fellow captains, Brian Boland and Mark Kirsten, all of my deckhands and anyone else who helped keep us running strong!
With all of this being said, I’ve been encouraged to continue on. I’m pulling somewhat of a ‘Brett Favre’ move and coming back. However, this season will look a lot different. I will be offering charters, but on an extremely limited basis. My summer will be filled with a lot of other adventures, but I want to continue to enjoy some time with guests out on the big lake. With the limited schedule, my availability will be on a first-come, first-served basis. I would expect that all of my availability will fill within the next day or two, so do not delay contacting me if you are interested in trying to get out fishing!
As for the remaining bulk of my business, I have been scheduling many of our long-time guests to fish with Captain Mark Kirsten on board his vessel Dark Horse. Although weekends are starting to get tight, we do have plenty of remaining availability on Mark’s boat to accommodate anyone interested in fishing.

A bunch of the Slam Dunk crew got together last night in Saint Paul to catch a MN Wild game vs the Anaheim Ducks. Captain Brian and family are big Ducks fans, but the Wild shut them out! Fun night for all of us, winner and losers alike!

As we near the end of 2024, there is a huge mix of emotions as I reflect on the past year.

This was another milestone year, season number fifteen, for Slam Dunk Fishing Charters. When I started this venture, I really had no idea what it would end up turning into. I certainly never imagined the level of success we have had. I owe this all to everyone who has helped along the way. To our customers, first and foremost, thank you for choosing Slam Dunk Charters year after year and keeping us busy on the water. To my friends and family, thank you for your help, encouragement, and support through all of the past 15 years. And to my crew: Brian, Mark, Justin, Wayne, Colton, and all those who have stepped up to help out at many times throughout the years, thank you!

It’s been a great ride thus far! With the success of the business, and the incredible fishery we have, every single one of the past 15 years has been amazing!

While I’m celebrating the milestone for the business, I am at the same time overwhelmed with grief and sadness after the sudden loss of my deckhand, “ace-in-the-hole”, and dear friend, Chris Klar.

Chris was there for most of the past 15 years and certainly had a huge hand in the success of the business, as well as the success we had on the water.

We made a great team from the very first time Chris stepped on the boat to fish with me. One thing that made us click, he was competitive, just like myself. We both had that same mindset of always competing, and mostly it was competing against ourselves and against what we did yesterday. Chris was never content simply meeting one goal, even if we caught our limit yesterday, he was thinking of how to learn, improve, and make today even better.

More than just a great fisherman, Chris was a friend who always had your back, worked hard, and made every day an adventure. He was the popsicle supplier for my kids, leaving them in the freezer for them when they came to visit fish camp. They adored Chris, not just for the treats, but his kindness, his laugh, and how he made them feel special.

Whether it was fishing, or his role as Public Works Director for his town, or his own personal lawn and snow business, Chris wanted to be the best in everything he did. But, he wasn’t doing it for himself or his own notoriety. He was doing it for the folks we took fishing, the people of his town, and for his loved ones.

I can’t imagine what next fishing season will be without Chris. The boat will feel empty without him and his larger-than-life laugh. We will think of him every time we wet a line, or watch the sunrise over the water, and with so many memories and stories we will share while on the boat.

Thank you for the memories and friendship Chris Klar, Mr. Plow, Big Sexy, forever “On Fish”.
