Wmrra Round 3 of Race-Racing Reporting.

My goal for this round was to drop 1-2 seconds from my previous best, and knew I could find that time in Turns 10-11. Yup, new PR is 1:47.064 - 1.1 ticks or more quicker.

Friday - Instructing for 2Fast was rewarding in a different way that day. My student left happier than someone who's really, really happy, which is the goal. It was hot. Cool, delicious beverages were enjoyed by all.

Saturday - 750ss - got an average start, ended up 8th out of 12. I'm fairly certain I pulled into the pits about 4-5 pounds lighter from sweating.
600ss - refreshed and ready to do battle again - 10th out of 17. Still a ways away from my goal time. In this race, by lap 2 I have swallowed the sun, and my mouth is a pizza brick oven but without the pizza, or beer that comes with the pizza.

Clubman Qualifier - a.k.a. "The Party Class". I was still kinda hesitant about running in this class, but it's been good for me in the past as I really enjoy the folks i race with and the battles are numerous! I grid up in the front row of the 2nd wave, and after Brandi starts us 2nd-wavers with the flag, I get a good start and start looking for rabbits to chase. This was a fun race, and I really enjoyed duking it out with Shane Moore ( #61 on a lovely Duc..) for the last 3 or so laps - swapping positions, having a blast! I have no idea what position i'm in when the checkers are shown, but i find out later i actually came in 1st. But, due to clubman's lap time rules, my times were below the cutoff and so DQ'd me, so "no soup for me.." I don't mind one bit, because my battle with Shane was the bestest fun all year, and chasing/being chased scored me my new PR in this race. The only trophy I needed at this point was the Coke from the bottle over ice, that tasted like brown, cola-flavored victory after this race. Cold, delicious beverages were enjoyed by all, again.

Sunday - Rain. Whaaaa? Yup, Sunday was much cooler than the 98deg-in-the-shade Saturday. Swapped my soft rear out for a medium rear in anticipation for any chance of racing later in the day on the proper tire in case the spotty rain holds off. Which, thank God, it did. Yay, let's do this.

600sbk - gridded up 2nd row - got great start and was up into 3rd or so through Turn 4, and began my slow descent backwards to my eventual placing of 8th out of 12. I learned a lesson about Turn 7 in this race, as a rider stuck it inside of me just before 7, which led to a second rider to sneak by me. Grrr.

750sbk - 2nd row grid again. Great start, up into 3rd until Chase learned from the 600sbk race not to waste too much time behind me and showed me the inside line as he went by me into 6 first lap around. But literally seconds later, Mark took a tumble down the hill at 7, which bumped me back in 3rd. ("don't look. hey, cool sparks. stop looking. don't look. don't look at the crash. look thru the turn. Oh, sorry mark hope you're ok, but i've gotta finish this race..") I started my usual backwards progression, and end up 8th out of 13.

Being able to get those great starts, put my head down and juuuust barely hang on to the lead pack for a couple laps, for Sunday's races, was a confidence booster coming out of this weekend - slow, but sure progress. Learned more about tires, and what they can tell you about your throttle application.

Next Round - July 18-19 at Pacific Raceways in Kent.

photo cred - brendan, my son who claims to never get "photo creds."

Race-Racing Round 4 Report at The Ridge:

Friday - split my time between workin’ my corner, getting tires/wheels mounted and re-acclimating myself to riding the r6. A hiccup started forming, causing weird/random cutouts - not good and not safe. Stayed in the 100/200 groups until whatever was causing it was found. Quick-shifter? Fuel issue? Bad gas?

Saturday - Beautiful morning. Weather was supposed to be 80+ all weekend! Morning practice, I went out with my novice in his practice to get an update on his lines and riding. Came back in with a bit of that same ‘hiccup’ on the bike as well as random false neutrals coming into turns 2, 7, and 11. I and a couple others went back to work troubleshooting. The hiccups looked to be caused by wacked fuel pump plug again. (New one is on order, btw.. Should be here by Aug 6th)

750ss race - I find out 10 min prior to race that my generator stopped working, so i have cold tires. Words of wisdom given helped calm those nerves as well as a bit of paddock-area tire warmup. On the warm-up lap, the bike dies before the start-finish line, and i pull to the side. Lovely. Reboot the bike a couple times, and it comes to life! I scurry around the track so i won’t be “that guy” and gridded up in 3rd row in 8th position. Board up, sideways, light goes out.. I get a good start as I’m up into about 5th or so coming into T2. Faster guys make their way around me during the race, and i cross the line in 9th out of 16th.

Clubman - I skip my usual 600ss race to give my body a rest util the later “Clubman” race. THAT one, i was looking forward to as it had a nice, fat grid of similar-lap-time racers - some slicin’ and dicin’ to be expected. Gridded in row 6, in 21st out of 24th. Light goes out. I get another good start, and i’m up into 3rd by Turn 2 behind Darling, Manheimer with Lionel and everyone else right smack behind me. I try and keep in touch with the leaders, but (insert excuse here) I let Lionel get past me i think in T12-13, by lap 4. So, 4th place for this one!

Sunday - Tried out a fix for my false neutrals that seem to plague me in races and practice went great - no hiccups nor false neutrals. The bike is good now, so it’s all up to the rider ;)

600sbk - Grid up in 13th out of 15. Man, it was hot out there. 87deg ambient, 133deg track surface temp. Ended up with slower laptimes than yesterday (huh?) and crossed the line in 7th. i was worn out. A quick peek at the 750sbk grid, and i decide to end my weekend with the 600 race on that note, with all body parts and bike in-tact..

Next round is at Pacific Raceways on Aug 23rd-24th.

Race-Racing Race Report for Round 2 at The Ridge.

This sums it up for me: I raced.

I have no idea what place i actually got, or what lap times I actually ran. Maybe I'll look at them later in the year, but for now, the fact that I was able to grid up with my bike and run a full 8-lap race on Saturday is a success for me.

I had other hurdles this weekend that prevented my full-out participation the rest of the weekend, but again.. Don't care. Raced.

The inspiration is still fresh in my mind when I remember how fellow racers, family members, paddock vendors, and random people stopped by to jump in and help, offer advice, or just say 'hi, glad to see you're back..'

As I was loading up the bike to head back home, I chuckled to think how my bike is leaving in BETTER condition than how it had arrived. For us motorcycle racers, that's a huge success, too.
