Hard to put to it words this team, these families, this season…but I’m going to try.
A year ago we were looking to replace half of our roster and add to our core. Our focus was looking to add not just talent, but players and families that love the game, understood the commitment, and sacrifices necessary to play at the level Ohio Elite has become accustomed to. I could not have imagined then, how perfectly those pieces would fit into our 14u puzzle. Starting the first week of January, our mantra was to stick to our ABCs, and not be consumed with wins and losses, or who was in the other dugout. Those were:
A- Always respect the game
B - Be a great Teammate
C- Compete
If we stayed true to ourselves, the rest would take care of itself.
More important than the 45-23-2 record, the 4 tournament championships, and 3 runner up finishes to me, is the growth of this team and how they truly loved competing with and playing for each other.
We had a disappointing exit from the Solon tournament to end the month of June. At that time, coach Aldo challenged the team to commit and focus on ending the last month of the season strong. 16-3-1 with back, to back, to back championships against some of the best competition out there was a July, not even coach Aldo could have imagined at that time. Especially when being faced with having to overcome the loss of one of our key players and team leader to a broken thumb. These players all came in with talent. What made them special was the families they come from, how they bought into wanting to be coached hard and pushed to their limits at times, in order to maximize our overall potential.
Over the last three weeks, tournament directors, site directors, and even opposing parents and umpires shared with me how they were rooting for us to win and how much of a joy it was to watch our team on the field. It seemed like every game, different players would take turns stepping up to deliver in key situations. There were times when I caught myself stuck in between being a coach, parent, and a fan of these boys.
Thank you to Coach Rob, Coach Rick, Coach Wilson, Coach Aldo, and to each family that put their faith in us to deliver and help these boys grow as players, but more importantly young men this year. It was a magical summer, and I can’t wait to get started in January 2025.
