Behind the Stall Walls... Horse Lessons or Life Lessons?
I was at a clinic once when the clinician was talking about our horses and how we manage their emotions. As he wrapped up, he smiled and said, "By the way, I'm talking about horses too."
I'm not sure everyone caught what he meant, but that phrase has stayed with me ever since.
As a high school teacher in my day job, I spend a lot of time helping students navigate emotions and finding ways to motivate, encourage, and support them. Hearing that simple statement opened my eyes to something far beyond what many of us think we're working toward with our horses in lessons: shows, trophies, blue ribbons, and titles.
I started to realize that horses may be some of life's greatest teachers, if we're willing to listen.
Fear... Anxiety... Anger... Abandonment... Self-doubt...
Don't get me wrong, the horse doesn't magically make those things disappear, but somehow they find a way to guide us through them. They teach us patience, resilience, trust, confidence, and emotional awareness. They challenge us to face what we'd rather avoid and the best part is, they reward us when we do.
Here's the cool thing, most of the time we don't even realize it's happening. Until one day, you look back and see how much you've grown. How much stronger, calmer, or more confident you've become.
Maybe that's why the best advice is often the same... slow down, be present, build trust, and give yourself grace while you learn. Growth rarely happens all at once. It happens one step, one small victory at a time.
"By the way... I'm talking about horses too."
