Today I realized that this is probably the last Spring softball season I get to coach one of my daughters. Not just them but many young ladies I have had the pleasure of coaching for a number of years now. While I am excited for what lies ahead for them, I would be remissed if I didn't say it is going to be extremely difficult for me to move forward. I will struggle not having a World Series to look forward to with them, and work and train to be our best. I understand that the days of fancy ribbons, and themed uniforms are gone. The days of silly socks have been replaced with social media posts and getting together to watch the boys game. I am grateful for my high school aged girls who have continued to play travel this season so that our amazing 8th graders don't miss out on their important growth. It has been very taxing all the way around and we have the whole month of April before we can even exhale. This amazing group of young women love this game and truly want what is best for our team and each other. That is probably what I love the most about each of them. As we set to move on to different schools the landscape of Regulators softball may be drastically different come this time next year, but I will be forever blessed by our OG' and families and coaches and the impact you have all had on our lives. Thank you all again for everything you ARE and lets finish this Final Spring season with the same fire and passion as when we first started. Let us MOUNT UP one final time and make this one of the most memorable seasons yet.

This is just a reminder that the large majority of coaches you’ll encounter during your kids’ youth sports years are volunteers.

They aren’t paid to be there.
They aren’t getting anything out of it for themselves.

They show up because they genuinely care.

These coaches dedicate their time, energy, and efforts to not only make your kids better athletes—but even more importantly, better people.

A good coach will teach the fundamentals of the game, sure. But they also teach things like grit, good sportsmanship, work ethic, and so much more.

They encourage your kids from the sidelines, high-five them when they make good plays, reassure them when they’re in a funk, and are intentional about being positive role models.

These coaches are the ones who come home after a practice or game beaming because the kid who’s been struggling all season finally made a basket or connected with the ball after a rough string of strikeouts.

They spend their (very little) free time looking up drills and inspirational quotes.

They want to teach a winning mindset, absolutely, but they also believe down to their core that fostering an environment where kids fall in love with a sport is the first step to their success—so they focus on being encouraging and kind instead of condescending and harsh.

Youth coaches volunteer because they’re invested not just in the game, but in your kid.

So the next time you’re frustrated with a coach’s decision—because that will happen at some point—know this—

They’re doing their best,
They’re making what they think is the best decision at any given moment,
They believe in your kid,

And they care more about them more than you’ll ever know.

To the moms next to me in the bleachers:

I love the bonds we’ve formed.

I love cheering on each other’s kids. I love the messages and the GroupMes and the constant encouragement. I love knowing you have my kids’ back and that if we’re ever in a pinch, you’ll be there in a heartbeat.

I love sitting next to you at practices.

I love collaborating to make sure the kids have the snacks and drinks and whatever they need. I love watching the kids come together and grow as a team. I love watching them win, and I love the way they’re learning to be there for each other when they lose.

I love the matching shirts and the inside jokes.

I love knowing that you get it.

You get the stress.

You get the sacrifice.

You get the glory of watching of your child succeed at something they’ve worked hard for and you get the pain of watching them struggle when they’re going through a slump.

You just get it, and not everyone does, and I’m so appreciative.

For the kids.

For the coaches.

For the team.

And for us too, because in the process, it feels like we’ve become somewhat of a little family.

I know this season won’t last forever, but I will always treasure sitting in the stands right next to you.

Shared with permission from Sister, I am with you.
