Meet the newest Find Your Fire athlete and future running buddy, Luna!⁣

She loves sightseeing, looking at the mountains, trying to run, taking naps, and can really rock the Goodr sunnies. ⁣

She also hates the heat so we have something in common already! ⁣

Excited to take her on some fun runs, but for now, we play 💕⁣

*Collaboration Announcement!*⁣

I am so excited to tell you that and Find Your Fire Running are teaming up to offer you a FREE Summer Run Group starting next Wednesday, June 2nd. It just so happens that it’s Global Running Day...which is what I call perfect timing. 👌 ⁣

Join us every Wednesday at 5:30 pm this summer for a 3.1 or 4 mile run along the beautiful coastline of Kennebunk, Maine. ⁣

Come early for a pre-run warmup and/or stay late for a post-run beverage at one of the local lower village establishments. ⁣

All abilities are welcome and the group is free for all. ⁣

Have a nagging injury? Stop into Reform for an evaluation or running analysis. ⁣

Need help training for your next race? Consult with Casey on how hiring a run coach can help improve your training, race times, and reduce risk of injury. ⁣

Just want to run with other people after a year of social isolation? Join the group and just have fun. ⁣

Group will meet in the parking lot of Reform Physical Therapy at 169 Port Road, Kennebunk. Optional dynamic warmup will start around 5:20 and we will take off for our run at 5:30. ⁣

Hope to see you there!

I’ve taken almost a month off from social media and friends...

10/10 would recommend.⁣

With that said I am recharged and ready for the spring/summer training season, ready for some exciting new partnerships and events coming up, and have decided to open two new athlete spots on my roster!⁣

I keep my roster small because I truly believe it is important to completely individualize your running program. As a Find Your Fire Athlete, you’ll get a personalized training plan that is based on the science of exercise physiology but also paired with your unique individual needs. I provide daily feedback on your workouts and a weekly check-in on your progress. We will also work on race planning and preparation, that is, if you have a race coming up! (Disclaimer: you do NOT have to have a race planned fo benefit from a run coach)

If you are in need of some structured coaching to get you towards your next goal, please reach out! DM me or send me an email at [email protected]

Oh, and how’s the new logo?

For this Week’s Win the Winter Athlete Spotlight, we are highlighting New York couple Jenna and Steve. I’ve noticed throughout the challenge that they submit a lot of runs together, and love it when couples can support each other in their goals and participate in a sport together. Can we say ?! Steve didn’t mention it in his bio, but he started a triathlon club out of Riis Park in Rockaway, Queens. Check it out at . ⁣

Let’s hear about their story!⁣

Their running history –⁣

Jenna: ⁣
“I started running at the age of 5 on a local c.y.o. team that my mom put my sister and I in. I ran competitively throughout the school years and went to the Varsity team as an 8th grader. From there, I was fortunate enough to receive an athletic scholarship to run the half mile & mile at Umass - Amherst. Now I run 5k, 10k, half marathons and marathons “for fun”.”⁣

Steve:⁣
“I grew up an athlete but never competed in a race until 2008 when a friend recommended signing up for a 5k. I didn’t even know what 5k meant 🤣. I’ve continued running competitively since then and increased to 10k, half marathons, marathons, and triathlons over the years.”⁣

Their favorite part about the sport -⁣

“We both enjoy running to stay in shape. It also allows us to keep a clear mind and we like to compete - mostly against each other 😂. We also like the drinks and party that follows each race 🍻.”⁣

Why they enrolled in the challenge -⁣

“We heard about the challenge through our running club, the . It’s been fun to participate together each week and has kept us motivated and held us accountable during the cold winter months.”⁣

What they are looking forward to -⁣

Steve:⁣
“70.3 Ironman - August 2021 in Orchard Beach, Maine.”⁣

Jenna:⁣
“Watching Steve compete in his 70.3 Ironman in Orchard Beach, Maine this August 🤣.”⁣

Jenna and Steve, thank you for sharing your story; I’m looking forward to hearing how the Ironman goes in August!

Week 11's WTW Bonus Challenge is all about Total Weekly Volume. But before I explain the challenge, I’d like to take a moment to talk about SMART volume progression. ⁣

Proper planning and program structure is imperative for performance and injury prevention. Athletes who don’t add enough volume week to week won’t get the performance benefit of “progressive overload”, i.e. stressing the body enough so it adapts and improves. However, there is a delicate balance between “enough” and “too much”. ⁣

Large increases in training volume can increase risk for injury and overtraining, so here are some general recommendations on volume increases, from the United Endurance Sports Coaching Academy. Don't believe the old 10% rule...your volume increases actually have more to do with your current volume, not an arbitrary percentage. The higher your current weekly mileage, the lower the percentage increase should be. Also keep in mind, these are 𝘮𝘢𝘹𝘪𝘮𝘶𝘮 increases, and should be adjusted based on where you are in your training cycle. Did you just complete your biggest volume week? Are you coming off an injury? Are you tapering for a race? Is it your recovery week? You should always take this into consideration when planning your weekly volume. ⁣
Suggested Maximum Weekly Volume Increases Based on Current Weekly Volume:

< 5 miles 50% ⁣
6-10 miles 35% ⁣
11-20 miles 25% ⁣
21-30 miles 20% ⁣
31-40 miles 15% ⁣
41-50 miles 10% ⁣
>51 miles 7% ⁣

So, here’s a brief explanation of Week 11’s Bonus Challenge (more details sent via email to participants)

In addition to the regular leaderboards, the 3 participants with the highest running volume will receive 8, 5, and 3 bonus points, respectively. There will be two possible categories for this bonus challenge; mileage and time. ⁣

See comments for details on the two options!

It’s time for this week’s Win the Winter Athlete Spotlight!!! Everyone meet Louise Mills-Strasser. In own words, “Hi, my name is Louise and I like running and drinking beer 🍺 🤣”.
Me too, Louise, me too. ⁣
⁣.
Let’s learn some more about her...⁣
⁣.
Her running history -⁣
“I started distance running in college! Senior year, my roommates & I signed up for the 2013 Pittsburgh Half and that was my first long distance race! Since then I've run dozens of road races from Beach 2 Beacon to the Chicago Marathon!”⁣
Her favorite part of the sport -⁣
“Hmm... my favorite part of running is stopping! 🤣”⁣

I think many people can relate to that one!⁣
Why she enrolled in the challenge - ⁣
“I ran the last 12 week challenge because peer pressured me into it. I had so much fun & kept talking about it all summer at run club. So now I got my run club friends involved too! Shout out to the Long Beach Wave Runners !! And I'm loving the weekly challenges this time around 💪🏼“⁣

This kind of peer pressure is the best kind of peer pressure!⁣
⁣.
What she’s looking forward to -⁣
“I’m very excited for the NYC Marathon! In 2020 I fundraised for the Colon Cancer Foundation (a charity near to my heart) to earn my spot in the race! Hopefully, I get to run this fall (or in the next few years) 🏃🏼‍♀️“⁣
⁣.
Sending good vibes your way for an in person , Louise! Thank you for sharing your story.
