There is no free lunch...unless you come help clean-up at The Woodland Trail DGC at Bixler Lake Park September 20th! Work time will be 9a-12p and/or 1p-4p. I will have food available for all that can come for one of those periods (and let me know in advance.) Most likely Pizzas, Chips, and Drinks but can leave that decision to the group. Please share with anyone that has time and a heart for service. Tasks will include picking up sticks, branches, limbs, and tossing them on a fire. Raking leaves and small debris is needed too.

Hey friends, I've been out at The Woodland Trail DGC often over the last few weeks cutting down and cutting up as much as I can get to. I've started burn piles and plan to burn them but will need some help. Let me know if you'll have an evening to spare and I will let you know which hole you can focus on. I have at least a dozen of various sizes around the course. You can help by making the small piles bigger or tending the larger ones I'll light for you. Any time you have is appreciated. The Kendall Cup is right around the corner and the course has looked better and better each year. Share if you know another enthusiastic helper.

Good afternoon, fans of Bixler Disc Golf! 2025 promises to bring us continued progress with both park courses East/West, and The Woodland Trail. The first update I'll share is that the park has purchased 18 more MVP Portal V2 baskets! 😄 These will be permanently installed as a second basket on TWT's eighteen holes. I have put orange driveway stakes out on every hole except 3 & 7. These stakes indicate the tentative area of the second basket and are there to facilitate design as well as clearing the green so the portable baskets we started with may be placed there first. This will allow us to adjust the portable basket before deciding on the permanent spot. Some guiding principles for choosing the locations are as follows:

1. Add to the variety of shot shapes currently required.
2. Neither basket should obstruct the intended or likely approach to the other.
3. Maintain or increase the overall length. The goal is to end up with an even mix of longer/shorter & left/right to maximize the layouts from each tee... without too much layout fatigue.
4. Maintain the reputation as tough but fair. This is subjective and there are still decisions regarding some live trees that still need to be removed in the current fairway and gaps, e.g., small middle trees on 7 & 8 making the gaps too narrow once Blue Trees are added.
5. Keep the paths from the basket to the next tee safe from incoming throws. This keeps the flow of play going during Tourneys and Leagues, both of which we would like to have soon.(Anyone interested in heading those up?)

More to come soon on the playbook for 2025 to include signage on the Park Courses (which we have), Blue and Red tees on TWT, Bridges, and more. Comment with any questions, and message me with any concerns.

Chris

Throw at your own (or your disc's) risk. I have the brush piles lit up on #6 at TWT. If you are available this afternoon/evening, come keep the fire going by tossing some more sticks on!

There are still a few spots left! Get signed up to try something new or challenge yourself against a fun group of local talent. At its worst, Disc Golf is a nice walk in the park.

The Kendall Cup is a PDGA-sanctioned disc golf tournament in Kendallville, Indiana beginning September 7, 2024 and hosted by Kendallville Parks Dept.

2023 was an exciting year for disc golf here in Kendallville. Permanent baskets, concrete tees for Bix East & West as well as Woodland Whites, and more areas cleared of undergrowth. 2024 goals include concrete Blue & Red tees for The Woodland Trail (TWT), signage all around, and dedicated storage. On the signage front, we have paid for the design and manufacture of signs for Bix E&W and would like some input on an idea. Rather than have a "PAR 3" designation on every sign I think it would be appropriate to instead have a "Beginner Tip/Intermediate Rule/Advanced Challenge" on each sign. In the comments below, please add a beginner tip you think is essential to know for those starting out.

We are in the home stretch to this year's Crew Cup and have made some great strides. Permanent baskets and concrete tees are the big ticket items but the course has also been more playable through the summer because of the effort of a few. Huge thanks to Corey Cooper for his time out there. To answer your first question, yes...we will be filling in the areas around the tees so the run-ups aren't step-ups. I plan to be out there tomorrow to mow the woods holes and trim some limbs.

If you can make time, there is plenty for you to do from super easy to more skilled.

1. Walk the course and pick up trash along the edges
2. Bring a rake, start at a basket and work your way out to about 11 paces to clean up Circle 1
3. Drags limbs and branches that are on the ground to one of three places
A. 50 ft into the woods away from the fairway where we'll never have to move them again
B. Into a pile in the middle where nothing will be hurt when it burns
C. To your car, take em home..enjoy🙂

Cheers,

McCreery

As we continue to work toward a better course for The 4th Annual Crew Cup , we'll be having a workday at The Woodland Trail on the second weekend in August (date TBD by a poll). As far as what the course needs most at the moment (aside from Concrete Tees and Signage) is as follows. Feel free to venture out there anytime and do what you can. Cheers

#'s 1,2,3 only need last minute prep to mow back edges and Blackberry trails and some trimming of the two corridor trees.
# 4 needs the branches from the tree that fell dragged further down the left edge and in toward the water.
# 5 just needs general clean-up. The backside of the green could be cleared back a bit as well.
#'s 6&7 need some chainsaws to continue cutting the dead stuff that stands and lays along the edges.
# 8 needs the most, I'll continue that project.
# 9 needs the Autumn Olive bushes in circle 1 and 2 pulled/cut. The trail from 8 basket to 9 tees needs reworked to enter 9 behind tees.
#'s 10&11 needs undergrowth cut and debris cleaned-up.
# 12 needs the dead limbs on the tree next to the Windmill cut & piled.
#'s 13,14,15 looking decent just needs general clean-up.
# 16 needs the undergrowth behind the basket cleaned out. Leave the Sumac Trees please. The bushy mess in the middle of the fairway needs trimmed/thinned.
# 17 needs the edges mowed (last minute) and the walls of the corridor hedged back a bit...I'll work on that.
# 18 needs the left edge of the fairway cleaned-up along the woodline, especially the last 100 ft.

*All holes, especially those in the woods, need raked out to circle 1 at least...preferably to circle 2 where able.
*Some small trees will be cut down before the tourney...let me do that.

Thanks Bixlerians.
