Hello trail riders and community! 🚴‍♂️🌳

Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce wanted to update you and any visitors planning to ride soon that there is a little detour on the Elroy Sparta Trail. While this short detour might be a little inconvenient for some, it is just to make improvements!

Project work resumes October 26, 2026. A bridge just northwest of Norwalk, heading toward Tunnel #3, will be replaced. Beginning October 26, the trail will be closed from the Norwalk bike trail parking lot northwest to County Highway T. A detour will be posted around the closed area. The Norwalk bike trail parking lot will remain partially open: approximately half will be used for contractor equipment and material staging, while the other half remains open for public use.

Looking ahead: After work in Norwalk is complete, crews will move to several bridges east of Wilton later in the fall into early winter. Closures will likely extend from Wilton to Logan Rd during that work.

Please plan ahead, follow posted detours, and watch for trail updates. Thank you for your patience as we work to make our trails even better!

The Wisconsin Friends of the Elroy-Sparta State Trail -WI FESST will be at the Sparta Area Chamber of Commerce Fallfest this year! Be sure to stop by to visit them & experience all the amazing fall fun in Downtown Sparta.

They have a spectacular setup planned—come have your picture taken with a ghost! 👻📸

Make sure to visit them, get a free spooky photo, and say "Trails & Treats!"

Over the next few days, we'll be featuring a different bike trail that passes right through our Commons!

First up is the historic Elroy-Sparta Trail, proudly known as "America's First Rail Trail." This scenic 32.5-mile route connects Elroy, Kendall, Wilton, Norwalk, and Sparta.

The Tunnels: The trail features three historic tunnels, ranging up to 3/4 of a mile long.

What to Pack: The tunnels are dark and cool, so flashlights and jackets are essential for your ride.

Trail Passes: Required for bikers ages 16 and older.
