Horses are incredibly observant animals. Every interaction helps shape how they feel about the people around them.

While treats are certainly appreciated, many horses aren't just learning to associate you with food – they're also learning to associate you with an experience. Your voice, body language, consistency, and the way you handle them all contribute to how they perceive you.

This is called associative learning. Horses remember patterns and experiences, often connecting a person with the emotions they felt during previous interactions. Over time, positive experiences can help build trust, confidence, and a stronger bond.

So when a horse eagerly walks over for a treat, it may be about more than the snack itself. It may be because they enjoy what comes with it – you.πŸ’•

Pasture royaltyπŸ‘‘πŸ«
Charlie may not be the biggest in the field, but he certainly has one of the biggest hearts. Always ready to greet visitors, ask for attention, and make new friends, he's become a favorite around the barn for his sweet personality and gentle nature.

Whether he's spending time with the horses or stopping by to see what everyone is up to, Charlie has a way of making people smile.

We think it's safe to say he's earned his royal title.πŸ’›

Vet day at Monarch, part 3🐎
Join us as Buck receives a flexion examination as part of his routine evaluation. Flexion tests help assess comfort, soundness, and joint movement by observing how a horse moves before and after certain joints are flexed.

Vet day at Monarch part 2🐎
Charlie and J were both great patients while getting their Coggins tests. A Coggins test checks for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) and is an important annual test recommended to help keep horses healthy and safe.

Routine veterinary care is a big part of life at the barn, and we’re always happy to keep our animals feeling their best.

Thank you to Dr. Grady Cofield with Weatherford Equine Medical Center, PC for stopping by the barn to help with keeping our horses happy and healthy!

One of the easiest ways to understand how a horse is feeling is by paying attention to their ears. Forward ears usually show curiosity or attentiveness, while pinned ears can signal discomfort, irritation, fear, or stress.
πŸ‘‰ Watch Louie and Gugu’s forward facing ears in this video, showing that they’re curious about the human in front of them… he’s no threat.

A horse’s posture and facial expressions matter too. A lowered head, soft eyes, and relaxed movements often reflect comfort and trust. Tense muscles, wide eyes, flared nostrils, or stiff movement can indicate anxiety or uncertainty.

The more we learn to read their body language, the more we begin to understand how horses communicate with the world around them, and how we can reciprocate.πŸ’•
