Volcanoes Ignite a New Era of Player Development

Ricky Ward Named Director of New Volcanoes Baseball Academy

The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes are proud to announce the launch of the Volcanoes Baseball Academy, a premier year-round baseball development program dedicated to helping young athletes maximize their potential through professional instruction, competitive opportunities, and a culture centered on excellence.

Leading the Academy is Ricky Ward, who has been named Director of the Volcanoes Baseball Academy. Ward brings decades of experience as a professional player, elite hitting instructor, and one of the most respected player development coaches in professional baseball.

“The Volcanoes Baseball Academy represents our commitment to becoming the premier destination for baseball development in the Pacific Northwest,” said Mickey Walker, CEO of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes. “Ricky Ward’s experience as both a professional player and one of baseball’s top hitting instructors makes him uniquely qualified to lead our Academy. His passion for developing young athletes and preparing them for the next level perfectly aligns with our mission.”

Ward will oversee all Academy operations, including private instruction, memberships, camps, clinics, team training, tournament teams, coach development, and year-round player development programming.

“This Academy is about much more than baseball,” said Ward. “Our goal is to develop complete athletes by teaching the fundamentals, building confidence, and helping every player become the best version of themselves on and off the field. I’m excited to build something special for families throughout Oregon.”
Ward played five seasons of professional minor league baseball, gaining invaluable experience that would later shape his coaching philosophy.

Following his playing career, Ward established himself as one of professional baseball’s most respected hitting instructors working for the San Francisco Giants for 13 years.
