One thing I’ve learned from coaching people—is that fitness shouldn’t become another job you’re afraid to take a day off from. Sometimes the best thing you can do is step away, rest, spend time with people you care about, or hang out with the dog. A couple of days away won’t erase the work you’ve done. Take care of your body, but make sure you’re enjoying the life you’re getting stronger for. What helps you recharge when you need it?

Balance isn’t something you finally achieve when life calms down. Work gets busy, family needs you, schedules change, and some weeks just go sideways. The goal isn’t to give everything equal attention—it’s to keep adjusting without abandoning yourself every time life gets messy. Some weeks three workouts happen, some weeks one does, and one still counts. Where could you give yourself a little more flexibility this week?

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your fitness is go to bed. If you’re already exhausted, squeezing in more exercise while cutting another hour of sleep isn’t always discipline—it can be a bad trade. Sleep helps you recover, train better, manage your appetite, and actually have some energy for the rest of your life. Before you add more to your routine, it might be worth asking what you could take away. Could going to bed 30 minutes earlier make a difference for you this week?

Eating better gets a whole lot easier when you stop making every food decision at the last minute. You don’t need seven days of perfectly prepped meals lined up in matching containers. Pick a few proteins, some easy vegetables, a couple of simple sides, and know what you’re having for dinner before 5:30 rolls around. A little planning when you’re not hungry saves you from relying on willpower when you are. What’s one meal you could make easier this week?

Strength training isn’t just about bigger muscles or lifting heavier weights. It helps you stay capable—carrying groceries, climbing stairs, working in the yard, traveling, playing with the grandkids, and getting up off the floor without thinking twice about it. As we get older, keeping our strength becomes less about how we look and more about protecting what we want to keep doing. That’s a pretty good reason to pick up something heavy a few times a week. What’s something you want to stay strong enough to do for a long time?

Being healthy shouldn’t mean spending your weekend worrying about being healthy.

Go out to dinner. Have the dessert. Enjoy a drink. Spend time with people you like and don’t feel like you need to earn it with a workout.

A couple of enjoyable meals don’t undo a week of taking care of yourself. Balance isn’t being perfect all week—it’s building habits that leave room for actually living your life.

What are you doing for fun this weekend?

Here’s a problem with the way we sometimes talk about strength: we make the gym the goal.

For most of us, it isn’t. Getting stronger matters because carrying things gets easier, stairs aren't a big deal, you can work around the house, travel, hike, play with the kids or grandkids, and keep doing the things you enjoy.

The weights are just the tool. Your life is what you're training for.

What’s something outside the gym you want to stay strong enough to keep doing?

Yes, you can workout dressed like this. 😂

One thing I’ve learned from coaching is that fitness works a whole lot better when it adds something to your life instead of becoming your whole life. Move your body. Get outside. Try something different. And every once in a while, don’t take yourself—or fitness—quite so seriously.

Life’s more fun that way. What’s something you do just because you enjoy it?

It’s September in New England, which means one of the easiest healthy snacks around is about to be everywhere: apples.

No prep. No recipe. No “healthy snack” product with 17 ingredients and a health claim on the package. Grab one on your way out the door, keep a few at work, or make a trip to one of our local orchards and pick your own.

Sometimes eating better really can be that simple.

What’s your favorite New England apple?

A lot of people think getting back in shape means wiping the slate clean and starting a whole new routine. Usually, that just gives you more things to fail at.

Instead, look for something you’re already doing pretty well and build on it. One workout becomes two. One decent meal becomes two.

You don’t need to reinvent yourself to make progress—you need to make the next step doable. What’s one thing you’re already doing that you could build on this week?
