As I lay here awake this morning listening to the rain, unable to sleep, I’m reflecting on that night exactly one year ago. That night I was also laying awake, unable to sleep, listening to the rain and a driving wind I never care to hear or feel again. Something else that is on my mind is just the pure darkness in those early morning hours that cloaked one hell of mess only to be fully revealed by the sunrise. In the last year, I feel I’ve learned a lot about humanity, good and bad, but this morning I’m focusing on the good. The support Megan and I received from family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, clients and most unexpectedly, complete strangers was truly overwhelming in the days that followed. Not only the support we received personally but seeing people give their time, money and effort to the community. From people trucking in supplies, bringing in equipment, to folks coming into a disaster area to feed a bunch refugees covered in sweat and mud and the people who spent, what felt like months, organizing and handing out supplies at the boat ramp. We continue to deal with the aftermath of the storm that has reshaped our lives, but from in a much better place as the sun rises this morning than that sunrise exactly one year ago I will never forget.
