Learning a Yurchenko is a big step in gymnastics, and it starts with building confidence through drills!
One of the most challenging parts is learning to roundoff onto the runway, punch onto the springboard, and then perform a back handspring onto the vault table. The technique is very different from a traditional back handspring, so gymnasts spend a lot of time breaking the skill down into smaller pieces.
These drills help athletes learn the proper body position, timing, and power needed to safely perform the back handspring onto stacked mats. Once they become comfortable with that motion, we begin progressing to drills where they go over the table without using their hands. This helps them gain confidence in the feeling of traveling over the vault table while developing the awareness needed for future Yurchenko vaults.
Every great vault starts with strong fundamentals, and these gymnasts are putting in the work one drill at a time! ππ€ΈββοΈ
