About Chuan Fa (Chinese Kenpo)
Chuan Fa is a system of martial arts rooted in the 5 animal shaolin styles. Chuan Fa or Chinese animal boxing has a long history dating back to 550 AD. Over the centuries many things have been developed, lost, and or adapted to conform with modern time. Here in America the Kenpo system has been around since the 30's. It has over the years become one of the most effe
ctive forms of self defense due to its excellent technique in raw street self defense. This Academy teaches a classical system in a very traditional method. Chuan Fa or Chinese Kenpo is not a root style like Wing Chun, Hun Gar, or Shaolin Kung Fu. Chuan Fa uses movements, theories and forms from many of the root styles. Both southern and northern styles. It has many concepts and theories from Tai Chi, Okinawan Karate, Jujitzu, Wing Chun, Hun Gar, Hapkido, and Akido. Essentially Kenpo draws from a number of Chinese Kung Fu styles, as well as a few concepts from Japanese, and Okinawian Karate styles. By drawing from many of the more specialized styles like Wing Chun and its use of close quarter combat, and Jujitzu with its focus on ground fighting, Chuan Fa brings a well rounded self defense system to it's practitioners. Trying to cover all the bases of a self defense situation. This is not a sport martial art. We focus on traditional values, practical self defense, a clear understanding of the concepts as well as its history and lineage. Our students are excellent stewards of the arts and are expected to live up to the standards the belt holds. We welcome anyone who wants to train in the classical method. We offer very competitive rates and no long term contracts. Call to set your first class. Picture
Sifu Chris Hutchings is dedicated to passing down the traditional Chinese martial arts. He has trained in The martial arts for 15 years and acted as a head instructor for 6 years. Before discovering Chinese Kenpo Chris trained in a Kung fu style called 6 elbows. He also has training in yang style tai chi. His dedication to the purity and classical nature of martial arts sets him and the Chuan Fa Martial Arts Academy apart from many competitors. His passion for teaching small groups and private lessons gives him the opportunity to really get to the root when it comes to his students and their training. Chris has lots of experience with kids as well as adults and loves to teach families. Chris has had many instructors giving him multiple view points on the Chinese Kenpo system. His first Kenpo instructor was Master Jeff Nell at AKKA. He trained diligently side by side with Jeff for 4 years. From there he trained under Master Rick Gibbins and earned his 3rd degree Black belt. Now Chris has branched out from the AKKA franchise to focus and hone his style to a more classical method. Currently Chris trains under Master Gary McGhee of the Five Finger Fist Society. Chris's contribution to the Kenpo Karate system is the inclusion of partner flow drills derived from tai chi push hands, wing Chun, Hun Gar, and various styles of Kung Fu. These methods allow the students to feel and learn to react in a real life situation. These 2 person, free form sets are the foundation of Chuan Fa or Chinese boxing, as taught at this Academy. Here we take our forms and technique to a new level by learning to fight with them. Hutchings takes in a smaller number of students than most teachers in an attempt to keep the system and it's teachings to remain pure and not watered down. His dedication to this art and it's instruction makes him a great addition to the Waldo Brookside area of Kansas City. Feel free to stop in and say hi.
