Today I launched what always seemed like an unattainable dream of mine back from when I started running at 19 with a 14:45min mile on Central Ave circa around ‘09 because I never truly felt like a “runner”. I’d run 15 miles without thinking but something was always missing and I finally realized I needed a connection to other runners in KCK and also to promote and encourage anyone was interested in even moving a mile to do so with a whole community of support..so thanks to the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City KS encouraging us to always engage even more with our community..
I STARTED MY OWN RUNNING CLUB FOR ANYONE WHO LOVES KCK, CENTRAL AVE, AND CARDIO AS MUCH AS I DO: the 913 KCK Run Club
I didn’t have any new friends join me today for our inaugural run but I am a believer in that if you build it, nourish it, and live by example-friends will come! Every single Saturday everyone is invited to join me and our children on a run from City Park through the entire Central Avenue Corridor and back, at your own pace beginning at 8am.
In running these streets for 10 years and Central Ave in particular there is a lesson to be had-eat all the bad food you’d like after a good run. It’s the only way any of us stay with running long term..seriously.
SO after this igangural kind of solo run today I have made one commitment to myself and the same to my community: I will be at City Park every Saturday for a 8 am start-rain, shine, snow, or sleet. I am always happy to break bread post run and get to know anyone a little better who would wish to.
You can run the entire distance or never even take off. What goals you set for yourself are yours and no one else’s-not even for a run club to dictate. I would just love to meet you and talk your ear off about running or anything else you enjoy during a Saturday run someday so come on through if you are ever interested. Clearly my kids all weren’t impressed but we can turn them to believers too! (And no the newborn wasn’t bothered by my brisk movement in scorching heat..she may be a runner like her mom after all)
