The older I get, the more I understand why a mother once said all she wanted for Mother’s Day was 20 minutes of silence. 😂

Life is loud. Attention gets scattered. Slowing down can start to feel like a luxury instead of a necessity.

This Saturday, I’m offering a small-group Listening Lab at InterUrban ArtHouse — a gentle, interactive experience exploring sound, music, reflection, and attention.

No musical experience needed. Just a little space to breathe, reconnect, and listen more deeply.

It might make a pretty lovely Mother’s Day gift. 💛

Learning to listen changed my life.

When I lost my hearing as a singer, I had to relearn how to listen—first to sound, and eventually to myself in a much deeper way. That journey inspired the Listening Lab: experiences that invite people to slow down, pay attention, and reconnect through the practice of listening.

In this intimate small-group session, we’ll explore sound, music, reflection, and shared experience. Together, we’ll notice the layers of sound around us, engage with a familiar song in a new way, and explore what melody, harmony, and rhythm can teach us about attention and connection.

No musical experience is needed. All are welcome.

This one feels really special.

On April 16, I’ll be joining Renée Fleming at the Lied Center of Kansas for a panel on music, health, and neuroscience.

As a singer, I studied Renée’s voice for years. And after I lost my hearing, her recordings were something I came back to as I learned how to listen again. So getting to share a stage with her, in this conversation, feels like a real full-circle moment.

I’ll be joined by Enrique Chi and Rebecca Lepping, with Deanna Hanson-Abromeit moderating.

What if the spaces we design could actively support how we feel, heal, and connect?

I had the opportunity to speak at SXSW on Neuroaesthetics in the Future of Design, and I keep coming back to how much this conversation is evolving.

For most of my life as a musician, I’ve experienced how sound, space, and aesthetic experience shape how we feel.

What’s changing is that we can now measure those effects—and design with greater intention.

Through the Intentional Spaces Initiative at the at Johns Hopkins University, we recently released the Intentional Spaces Roadmap, a strategy for advancing this work across sectors.

The Roadmap focuses on three key areas:
• Building evidence
• Developing infrastructure
• Strengthening cross-sector collaboration

Together, these create a pathway for integrating arts and the built environment into how we design for health and wellbeing.

This isn’t about adding art at the end.

It’s about rethinking how spaces are designed from the start to support how people feel, connect, and thrive.

Grateful to share the stage with such thoughtful panelists, and especially to Robyn Landau from Kinda Studios for leading such a rich and generative conversation.
