I think this is mostly fair if we’re talking strictly about resale value. But that’s where I think the conversation needs some pushback.
PSA is the king of resale right now. No argument. Biggest buyer pool, easiest to move, and people routinely pay more for the same card in a PSA slab.
But that doesn’t automatically make PSA the best grading company. It means PSA has the strongest brand and market. Those are two different things.
If the exact same card gets a 10 from two reputable companies and somebody pays $400 for the PSA while the other sells for $200, that doesn’t mean PSA graded the card twice as well. It means buyers value those three letters on the slab.
There are several different conversations here: grading accuracy, consistency, transparency, slab quality, eye appeal, cost and resale value. PSA can win resale without winning everything else.
TAG is a good example. I’m personally not crazy about their slab design, but what they’re doing with grading transparency and showing collectors WHY a card received its grade is impressive. Their lower resale value says more about market adoption than their ability to grade a card.
SGC has earned its reputation with vintage collectors. Beckett is its own animal a regular BGS grade may trail PSA, while a Pristine 10 or Black Label can command a monster premium.
And something else gets overlooked:
Not every card you send in is coming back a 10.
Those huge PSA premiums everyone talks about are usually most noticeable with Gem Mint 10s. Start talking 9s, lower-value cards, grading fees and shipping, and the math can change quickly.
So my question isn’t just, “Who has the most valuable slab?”
It’s WHY am I grading this card?
If I’m selling and maximizing return, PSA is probably the obvious choice much of the time.
For my personal collection? Different story. I care how the slab looks, how the grading was done, transparency, and whether I actually enjoy looking at the darn thing.
Personally, I’ve never thought PSA made an attractive slab. That little red-and-white label doesn’t suddenly become beautiful because somebody will pay me another $100 for it. 😂
That’s why I appreciate companies trying something different, including Arena Club.
PSA is the current resale standard. Absolutely.
But “highest resale value” and “best grading company” are NOT interchangeable.
The market decides what the slab is worth.
The grading process determines the quality of the grade.
And the collector decides what belongs in their collection.
Those can be three completely different answers.
