I have many fond memories as a young boy getting on a plane or a boat to Oahu to visit this mans home. Listening to he and my father talk for hours about fishing, new lure shapes, super plungers, salt and pepper straight runners, and catching up on each other’s family’s. I remember being enamored when he would invite us down to his basement where he made all his creations and seeing all his latest lures on shelves, and listening to him explain what he was thinking of creating next. Memories I will cherish for the rest of my life of a kind man named Joe Yee. A hui hou Uncle Joe…

This fish is definitely one of the most memorable catches to date! Stakes were high, bite was all time, and fun battle with our whole team assembled together! Congratulations to the champs yesterday winning the onboard “Apex”! incredible catch so stoked for your big win and getting the cup back to Kona!

Big mahalo to for always supporting us with care packages thru the years! Erik’s “Smash Bait” needs no introduction, it’s been a credit to many incredible catches for many of us over the years. Reminder, todays the day to celebrate Capt. Pete’s life! We will be meeting around 2:15-2:30pm at the Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club for a blessing before we depart Honokohau around 3:15 to spread his ashes. Anyone looking to get on a boat for the service should be there early to hopefully get an opportunity to jump on with someone. Ashes and flower drop planned for 4:00-4:15pm. We will all meet at Big Game Club after boats get back for food, music, drinks and old stories. Hope to see all our friends and family to send off Captain Peter Hoogs and celebrate his life!

Peter Fowler Hoogs, 86, of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2022, at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon under hospice care. His family was by his side every day during hospice, giving him loving attention and sharing conversations about memories of family, friends, and all his life achievements.

Peter was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on March 31, 1936, the son of Albert and Barbara (Fowler) Hoogs. Peter is survived by: his sister, Margo (John) Olson; two daughters, Pamela Allen and Jennifer (Roy) Anderson; and three sons, Bob (Loreen) Farrell, Toby Hoogs, and Teddy (Amy) Hoogs. Twelve grandchildren also survive Peter: James (Rosina) Harris; Jan Perrelli; Autumn and Michael Allen; Kelsea (Jon) Breese and Kira (Bryce) Cosio; Roy, Peter, Jakob, and Willa Anderson; and Lillian and Landon Hoogs. Four great-grandchildren survive Peter: James, Marcus, and Danielle Harris, and Carson Cosio. Late in his life, he developed a special relationship with his grandnephew, Jaime Hoogs. Willa (Hoeser) Hoogs, Peter’s wife, preceded him in death as well as his father, Albert Hoogs, his mother, Barbara Hoogs, and his brother, Frederick (Althea) Hoogs.

Peter lived an adventurous life – starting with an often-shared memory of playing outside his home as a young boy and seeing a Japanese Zero fly over him during the Pearl Harbor attack. The plane was at such a low altitude that he could clearly see the pilot’s face. He attended Punahou School in his younger years and then moved with his family to Inverness, California where he attended Menlo High School. He joined the US Army Airborne Division, became a paratrooper, and was stationed in Augsburg, Germany. After the military his waterman skills led to a job with Kentron Hawaii missile recovery at the Pacific Missile Range at Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands. It was there that he took up underwater photography and later published a book of Hawaiian reef fish photos. It was also where he was recognized for saving the life of a man who had fallen from the gangway of the Ocean Evelyn vessel. Also, as a young man Peter worked as an airline steward, a foreman at an oil refinery in Oahu, and helped in a relative’s concrete construction business. He also had a pilot’s license. Continued…⬇️
