Today marked the end of another incredible whale season for The Magic Merman… and I’m feeling all the emotions. 🌊🐋
Months of early mornings, salty skin, wind in my hair, and the absolute privilege of sharing these waters with some of the most majestic beings on the planet. Every season is different, every day unpredictable… and yet, somehow, it always gives us exactly what we need.
All season long, I kept hoping for one perfect moment — a full breach, that I could capture on video. Time after time, I’d miss it by seconds, or my camera wouldn’t be ready, or it would happen just out of frame. It became my “almost” moment of the season.
And then… on the very last day… it happened.
A full, powerful, breathtaking breach — and I got it. 🎥✨
It felt like the ocean’s way of saying goodbye. Like a little gift after a season of patience, awe, and deep respect for these incredible animals. A reminder that sometimes, the moments we wait the longest for come exactly when they’re meant to.
Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it. For the whales, for the people I get to share this with, and for a life that still manages to surprise me.

Our close encounters (I was able to get on video) from today!
We were so lucky to have the one and only Bethany Shimasaki onboard with us today 💙🐋
There’s something so special about sharing the ocean with someone who brings not just deep knowledge, but pure heart and electric energy. Bethany has this beautiful way of translating whale behavior into stories that make you feel connected to every splash, breath, and tail slap.
And let’s be honest… at this point we’re starting to think the whales have her on speed dial. 😂 Every time she steps on the boat it’s like the humpbacks are whispering, “She’s here, boys… let’s go!” Mugging? Check. Close passes? Of course. A little extra flair? Naturally.

There is nothing more humbling than earning the trust of a mother in the wild. 🤍🐋
This week alone, several mother humpbacks chose to bring their newborn calves right up to our boat. Slow passes. Gentle rolls. Little babies peeking up at us with curious eyes while mom hovered close by — calm, watchful, powerful.
And as if that wasn’t magic enough, even a bottlenose dolphin mom allowed her tiny one to come in close. 🐬
Think about that for a second…
These mamas carry their babies for nearly a year. They cross entire oceans to give birth here in Maui’s warm, protected waters. Their whole world becomes keeping that calf safe. And in those quiet moments, they decided we were safe enough too.
That kind of trust isn’t something we take lightly. It’s everything.
We slow down. We soften our energy. We let them choose the encounter. Because when a wild mother feels safe enough to share her baby with you, that’s not just an encounter — that’s an honor.
Maui continues to remind us… this is sacred. 💙
So grateful to witness these first breaths, first fluke kicks, and first curious approaches of the season.
Magic mamas.

When a humpback whale mama chooses to bring her baby right up to our boat, it’s hard to put into words how fortunate we are. These are the moments that make you pause—full of pride, respect, and gratitude.
A mother trusting us enough to introduce her calf… that’s everything. Strong, gentle, protective, and powerful.
