September 11 and 12th - Special New Moon Goliath Night Dives

It may seem counterintuitive, but according to a study conducted by the Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science of the University of Miami the best time to witness the goliath grouper spawning event is not when the moon is full, but rather shortly after dusk during the new moon phase.

One thing to note: goliath groupers are ambush predators, swooping in, opening their large mouths, and swallowing their prey whole. On night dives, that means you might have a large fish materialize out of the darkness next to you with surprising speed often to swoop up the tasty morsel that your flashlight just illuminated. Opportunistic eaters, they are happy to let you do the hunting for them.

Saturday!
2PM we are headed to MG111 and Tunnels..

The MG-111 river barge and Warrior Reef, serves as a Goliath playground. There, the large fish often stack on the pillars facing into the current.
Tunnels, a spectacular and very popular reef dive is an the over flow area during Goliath season. Several goliath groupers like to hang out by the first of the three tunnels, while several more can be found under a substantial ledge that divers will encounter near the 25-minute mark of their dive.

It was a perfect ending to the Labor Day weekend. The Goliath spots, the Wreck Trek and a few hunting spots were all packed with fun encounters and opportunities. We have a few more weeks of Goliath aggregation, the hunting season is also fully underway, and the Jupiter Ledge is filled with all your favorite critters!! Light currents, warm water, and more than a “Boat Length” of visibility. It’s just a perfect time to dive in South Florida!!!
