How fast should you be progressing as a new dancer?
The honest answer is that there is no “normal” timeline. Everyone learns at a different pace!
But there’s something important to understand about learning to dance:
Knowing the steps ≠ knowing how to dance.
In your first few months, you may learn basic patterns, recognize rhythms, work on timing, and start understanding how leading and following work.
Over time, you’ll begin to:
✨ Remember patterns more easily
✨ Stay on time more consistently
✨ Recover when you make a mistake
✨ Feel more comfortable with a partner
✨ Understand how and why the movements work
✨ Develop balance, technique, connection and musicality
And these things take practice and time.
You might know 20 steps and still feel awkward dancing them. That’s completely normal! Becoming a good dancer is a process of building skills—not simply collecting more steps.
So instead of asking, "How many dances should I know by now?" ask yourself:
Am I better than I was six months ago?
If the answer is yes, you’re making progress! There’s no finish line in dance - just more to discover! 🕺💃
