Stonewall Peak has had a name change. It will now be called by its Kumeyaay name of Cush-pii. This name change has been in the works for a while and became official at the end of last year. A huge shout out to Kumeyaay Diegueno Land Conservancy for getting the name changed. Expect to see updated trail and interpretive signs marking this change in the upcoming months.

Happy Friday! Here is the latest information from Cuyamaca.

🌸 They’re here. The azaleas are blooming just off off the Azalea Creek Loop Trail by the creek. Some are blooming right next to the trail. Look for thimble berry, California columbine and diamond clarkias as you hike out to the azaleas 🥰.

🦟🪰 Flying insects are out and so annoying. Don’t be surprised if you see people fanning their hands across their faces shooing the insects away. That’s what’s known as the “Cuyamaca Wave”😁.

☀️☁️ Expect a mix of sun and clouds this weekend with today being the warmest with the high in the mid 80s.

Have a great weekend!

If you are looking for wildflowers and don’t mind hiking The loop that includes the East Mesa Fire Road, Oakzanita Peak and the Upper Descanso Creek Trail might be for you. Golden yarrow, gentians, and foothills penstemon are some of the wildflowers blooming in the area. Butterflies and skippers can be seen flitting from flower to flower on the hike. Just be aware that Upper Descanso Creek Trail has poison oak and biting flies if you decide to hike that trail.

This “‘ewii kunyilly” (a species of the western diamond rattlesnake in Kumeyaay) was seen on the Stonewall Peak Trail this morning when it was a little cold for the snake to be peppy. Remember to stay on the trails and watch where you put your hands and feet and check out where you are going to sit before sitting. Rattlesnakes live here in Cuyamaca and we all need to keep a look out for them.
