Hell Creek Fishing report for 7/29

Same as before...walleye fishing is about as good as anyone can recall. Still hanging in 12 to 20 most mornings with bigger fish out over deeper flats or breaks. Deep humps are a very good call. Crawlers on rigs or jigs are the standard but leeches on a drop shot, or simply plastic and a jig/drop shot are all working too. (Cranks too.) Eaters this year are fat 19-20 inchers. Lots of 22 to 26 inch fish and 30 inch plus fish are pretty much a daily deal for the likes of Ben Powell. Brem won the tourney with a record weight of over 130 pounds for ten fish. Yes it is hot so folks are going early and coming in early or going back in the evenings.

Normally this time of year we have the "perch hatch" with millions of two or three inch hatchlings making up a substantial part of the predator diet but with water level dropping and perch numbers at a low cycle I have not seen that this year. My feeling is that this has affected the pike bite quite a bit and thus even the hammer handles are subsisting on ciscos much deeper. As such northerns remain rather scarce with some scattered in with pods of eater walleyes and a few in the shallows early.

Bass are ripping it up in 20 to 30 feet and are coming in waves. Seeing them chase ciscos up to the top like tuna do in the salt. Lots of two to four pounders with quite a few over five. They are packing on the weight and this fall should be stellar for large mommas.

The first salmon derby is on Friday and Saturday and a few Hell Creek regulars are participating. Around this section of the lake the bite is good but outside of the boundaries! Most are at 70 feet with some dropping into the 100 ft depths on clam still hot days. Blackish, glow or white flies behind matching flashers early and go to bright greens/blues or white and silver as it gets bright. Lots of salmon folks are running 300 foot copper on boards along with downriggers and dippsies. If you don't have downriggers running straight dipsies will work well once you get the hang of them. For people wanting to get hands on with all the rigs I would suggest hiring Ben or Tasha for a day.

Lakers are sitting tight to the bottom in 100 feet or deeper. I have found that the old foundations that are marked on Lake Master charts a good place to look. Just enough structure to make them happy I guess.

Don't let the heat keep you off the water. The dinosaur folks are braving it in their tent city!

Latest Fishing update! From Bob Bergquist

"Warriors finished up today. Walleye and bass were fantastic. (So many limits the first two days that an emergency restocking may be in order!) Northerns have become a bit sullen with the calm and warming waters. We got a few today in 20 to 30 foot depths, but they are struggling a bit after the fight so if releasing them try to keep them in the water and baby them. Hate to say it but the lake needs a good stiff wind for a day or two to get some cooler water up toward the surface or the dog days of August may well set in perhaps."
