Howdy folks, big news in the Year of the Fire Horse!
I’m thrilled to share that after a loooooong process I have officially purchased the historic Edwards Equestrian Facility in Joppa and will be expanding my native plant nursery onto the property. The farm has now been placed into land preservation, and I’m fixin’ to create a true destination gem for the Northern Baltimore metropolitan area!
Over the next year, you’ll see phased development as nursery infrastructure is built out. Equine operations will continue, and limited onsite nursery sales will begin this spring.
Ultimately, visitors will be able to browse over 16,000 sq. ft. of native plants, including a 2,400 sq. ft. four season greenhouse slated for completion this fall. The sales building will be stocked with site grown cut flowers, fresh vegetables, and spices from local purveyor Max’s Degrees.
Nursery stock will be grown onsite across 1.5 acres of row cropped native flowers, complete with pedestrian friendly grass pathways for an immersive experience and great photo opportunities.
Agritourism and workshop offerings will follow over the next few years as I work with the County on permitting. I want to bring everything under one roof and create a one-of-a-kind agricultural destination for onsite sales, education, community programming, and family friendly activities.
The property itself is rich with history, featuring a 200-year-old home and land records dating to the 1600s. In the late 1940s, it became a refuge for another Baltimore-city slicker when the Edwards purchased it and transformed it into a cattle operation. They gave the farm its current namesake although in newspapers Mr. Edwards, the one with the brown-thumb, jokingly called it “Ed ache.” He was principal of Baltimore City College, while Mrs. Edwards founded Baltimore’s Bookmobile program and became a nationally known librarian advocate for adolescent reading.
The farm offers ample parking, and its location — just off I 95 and just within the agricultural preservation zone — makes it easily accessible for commuters and residents of Joppa alike.
More updates soon — I cannot wait to get to work!
