These scents are collected by a hunting biologist, formulated and delivered directly to stores. Upon collection our scents are chilled to lock in fragile volatiles in the urine. Scientific Approach is collected from the Southern subspecies of whitetail deer that we hunt in Louisiana. Most other scent companies use northern subspecies. Whitetail deer are very curious animals; this is why some hunte
rs do have success with other deer scents (the deer smell the scent and wonder what it is so they may check it out). On the other hand, when using Scientific Approach you are going to draw more deer in because they believe there are other deer in the area. At Dugdemona Research we are truly taking a scientific approach to produce the highest quality scent available on the market. We strive on marketing the freshest possible scent available to hunters and freshness counts. Our research has shown that over time these fragile volatiles and secretions in the urine will deteriorate. By immediately chilling the scent upon collection the deterioration process is drastically slowed. The chilling process we use at Dugdemona Research lets you then have scent that does not have to be kept cool but doesn't rapidly deteriorate as many scents do (scent also disperses better at a warmer temp.) After so long urine begins to break down or "rot" turning a very dark brown almost black in color and has a very putrid smell. This is what you see with most deer scents on the shelves in stores. Any scent you buy off the shelf in most stores (more than likely) is probably going to be at least a year old or older. (it is not fresh scent) Fresh urine will be yellowish or light brown in color but not a bright yellow (one company even adds yellow coloring to their scent). Some bucks especially during the rut may have a little darker urine as well as some does. This will vary from deer to deer. Fresh scent also has a complete different smell than what you are use to smelling with old urine. Compare the difference in coloration and smell from a tube of Scientific Approach to another average bottle of deer scent. We can take a scent tube of our scent , set it outside in the heat for one year, come back and it will look and smell just like the average bottle of deer scent. Freshness is the key to success when using scents (only fresh scent has the chemical compounds that actually calm deer and draw them in). There are some misconceptions by scent companies and hunters about when does' are really in heat and when you should actually use Doe-in-heat scent. If you look closely from brand to band you will notice some scents might have "Estrus" and some will have "Estrous" written on them. It is spelled two different ways; both have different meanings. Estrous means the whole 26 day cycle that the doe has. Estrus means those few golden hours of true heat when the doe is actually receptive to a buck. At Dugdemona Research we use scientific methods of knowing just when the doe is in Estrus and then begin collection. We can also control the amount of daylight reaching a doe and with certain drug combinations can make the doe come in estrus earlier than normal; this way we can collect estrus scent for the hunter before the rut starts. So you are getting the highest quality of "in heat' scent available. Never use any type of in heat or in rut scent early in the season, only during the rutting season should they be used. If you use these types of scents during the wrong time of the year you can actually spook them.
