APRIL MEMBER SPOTLIGHT!
Chris Sinosky, AKA Mrs. J3
Her story ~
“I started CrossFit because of my granddaughter. While playing outside one day when she was 4 years old, she got away from me and ran toward a busy road. I realized I could not catch her. Thankfully, my neighbor was also outside and able to get her to turn around. The moment shook me. It was a wake up call. I came into the house hysterical and immediately asked my spouse, J3, to sign me up for the three‑week beginner CrossFit course. J3 had been doing and coaching CrossFit for years. As a Type 2 diabetic, I also wanted to lose weight, get stronger, and improve my overall health—not just for myself, but so I could keep up with my family and be there for the moments that matter most. The three-week program helped me ease into CrossFit at my own pace and gave me the confidence to keep going.
I’ve always been active growing up. I was one of only a few girls in my neighborhood, so I spent a lot of time playing sports with my brother and his friends. In school, I played volleyball, tennis, and also participated in summer league softball.
After having my first daughter, exercise was no longer a priority, and, over time, my own health was on the back burner. When my second daughter was born, I did some exercising at home, but fitness wasn’t very consistent.
In 2002, a serious accident changed everything. While coaching cheerleading for my daughter's team, I was spotting a stunt. The cheerleader fell and hit my head, knocking me unconscious. At the hospital, doctors discovered I had a brain tumor. What followed was a long and difficult journey—I was out of commission for a couple of years due to complications and ultimately underwent five brain surgeries. Recovery took years, and during that time, I focused on healing and regaining my strength.
The scare with my granddaughter was in August of 2022. That's when I signed up for the three‑week CrossFit beginner course. CrossFit has definitely been challenging for me, especially since I started at 54 years old. At first, I wasn’t sure if I could really do it. I would see how my spouse, J3, felt when coming home from workouts and, honestly, I thought they were a little crazy for putting themselves through that. I couldn’t have been more wrong—they created a monster. For me, the gym is not just about physical health, but mental health as well. I’ve met some of the most amazing, supportive people who I now consider some of my best friends. It is the most encouraging and non‑judgmental environment I’ve ever been part of, and that support has made all the difference.
CrossFit really is for everyone, at any age, in my opinion. Apparently, you can teach an old dog new tricks. For me, showing up is the biggest battle—and once I do, everything else falls into place.
My goal moving forward is simply to keep showing up four days a week. I’ve come so far since starting. When I began, I couldn’t do a sit‑up, a push‑up, or jump rope to save my life. Now I can do all of those things—and I actually enjoy jumping rope. That progress alone reminds me why I keep coming back. My family is my life. I am one of three kids. I have an older brother and a younger sister who are incredibly supportive of my fitness journey. My spouse, J3, is my person, and our girls mean everything to me. And then there’s the grandbaby. I want to be around for her for as long as I possibly can. She’s one of the biggest reasons I continue to show up. Along with that—and maybe just as important—is my obsession with the 9:45 class and the incredible people at the gym who keep me coming back.”
Chris has lost weight, gotten stronger, and improved her overall health significantly! We are so proud of you, Chris! And are glad you are part of our family!
