Thinknswim

Thinknswim A swimming technique and strength training program for developing swimmers in Johnstown, PA.

This program employs an integrated approach, built on the premise that learning comes not only through continued instruction on technique and consistent feedback, but also through the spirit of community and cooperation that participants themselves demonstrate towards one another. Swimmers are encouraged to learn not only by intellectual understanding the basic principles and concepts of swimming

but also by kinesthetic awareness – what it feels like, what the muscles must practice and remember – in order to swim elegantly and efficiently, and fast. Sound technique, injury-free exertion, and effective biomechanics form the foundation of our coaching philosophy. General population youth and adults looking to improve mobility and functional fitness are also welcome. Program owner and coach, Zing Allsopp, holds certifications from the International Youth and Conditioning Association, the National Academy of Sports Medicine, the American Swimming Coaches Association, and the International Swim Coaches Association.

Side breathing butterfly isn’t for everyone…but it’s a skill worth trying and learning…

It’s NOT wrong or illegal — just different and potentially effective. I teach it, and I encourage swimmers to try it. Sometimes, just exploring a new movement pattern or skill can help improve existing skills and techniques.

Cammile describes the pros and cons to a side-breath butterfly and then demonstrates forward breath as well as race pace butterfly with the side breath. Requ...

We want power, propulsion, progress. So what’s the immediate instinct? Aggression and force. And then we find that in spite of the extra effort, we’re not moving all that much faster.

Here are a few things to consider.

1. Water does not move in straight lines. It is fluid, and it moves in waves, so when you pull, don’t pull in a straight line. Smooth curves will yield better results than rigid lines.

2. Water is also malleable, not solid. Softer hands will help you hold onto the water better.

3. Water has volume and depth. Use your entire arm from your armpit to your fingertips. Think of a boomerang, how it is shaped. And when you pull through, be aware that the bend in your elbow has surface area and therefore possesses propulsive potential. Imagine you have a paddle at your elbow. It needs to be part of your pull.

Instead of force and fury, employ finesse and flow. There’s beauty and elegance in mindful, purposeful speed…

The Difference Between Experts and Beginners

I recently came across this graph and was really floored with how accurately it depicted our evolution of knowledge and expertise. This has become and more relevant with social media allowing everyone to have an opinion and to self proclaim expertise.

At , we always discuss this concept with our physical therapy students and strength and conditioning interns. They all want to start a website and social media branding, and often try to do it by pretending they are experts. They’ll learn something and then the next day talk about it on social media as if they were now experts on the topic. I always advise them that anyone with experience will see this lack of authenticity and it will ultimately end up hurting your brand.

Trust me, when I see some posts on Instagram I shake my head. Often times it’s proclaiming something that with a little more experience, they would realize maybe isn’t the best idea. And if you are too vocal about your stance, you’ll end up defending your position in the future instead of keeping an open mind and adapting as you learn and experience more.

What can you do about it? Rather that self proclaim expertise, embrace the fact that you are learning and share your journey. That will help you grow more personally, and all of us on Instagram will grow with you.
