As a professional golf performance coach, I am intrigued to hear the opinions of everyday golfers on this matter. If you had to prioritize one aspect to improve your game, would you choose to hit your drives with greater accuracy or hit your drives with increased distance?

Sitting around yesterday with several coaches, the topic came up about clients who contact you saying, 'I have a tournament on Saturday, can I get in for a lesson this week, even though Saturday is only 2-3 days away.' The other coaches responded with disdain, saying that person is looking for a magic pill, but I totally disagreed.

Now hear me out fully before you judge. I broke it down like this: Let's take the best players in the world. Every player is not dialed in every week, like Scottie Scheffler, we can all agree on that. But they do know they have the skill and assets to get the ball around the course and play well, but right now, something is just off. Most of those players are not looking for the coach to fix something that week. I submit that many of those players are looking for the coach to communicate something to them that will allow them to tap back into all the work they have already done. It could be the same thing with Joe and Sally Golfer.

They are hoping the coach can simply communicate something that gives them that 'Aha' moment and get out of their own way, reverting back to breaking the swing down into pieces looking for something to fix. The longer I coach, the more I have accepted how important it is about what and how we say things, regardless of the level of technique and mechanical knowledge you may have. So, to wrap it back around, I personally don't believe the majority of players that desire a session right before an event are looking for a magic pill.
I believe many of them are making themselves vulnerable so that hopefully the professional coach will relay information that triggers something from the past that ignites their internal balance and rhythm to return.

I saw a topic this week or last week, but it wasn't the first time it has popped up. The common theme was what have you done differently in your golf game as you get older. And almost to the letter, I saw a common theme: 1) I stopped playing anything over a 6 iron, and 2) I went to softer and lighter shafts. Has the golf industry duped the public into thinking that softer and lighter is the way to go?

The reason I ask is because most of the adult men that step on my lesson tee are playing clubs that are too light, too soft in flex, and way too upright. And most of the women that step on my lesson tee have been sold so-called ladies' flex and can't control the ball consistently, partly due to that issue. When I talk to many Master Club Fitters and builders, to a letter they say that a golfer should play the heaviest and stiffest shaft that they can play for 36 holes of golf. So when you take that into consideration, is your bag properly fitted for you, or were you part of the trend?

While scientists recommended eating more fruits and vegetables for better health, food companies ran to the lab with this great idea to create energy-based foods labeled as "Fat-free" laden with added sugars, such as muffins, yogurts, chips, and even chocolate, while processed milk became a staple of American markets for years to come. Obesity and diabetes have become a problem ever since; the overweight and obese percentages were at an all-time high in 2008 at 63.8%, and today, in 2026, we are at 42.5%, which means every 2 out of 5 Americans are struggling with obesity.

9 holes in frigid temps 44 with a feel lime temp of 35 with blades and persimmon woods and was absolutely launching the ball. Winter is one of the few times of the year where I can actually work on my own game versus helping others with theres the majority of the time.

For me to know if the winter work I have been doing is becoming usable and sustainable cold days are the ultimate test playing with a limited bag. 44 degrees with a feel like temperature of 39 🥶 with blades and a persimmon with a Apex 5 shaft will let you know immediately.

Many small important things are cloaked in bigger movements and get neglected and a good coach takes the time to educate clients on these little things that can make a huge difference in a players golf journey.

Over the years, I’ve had great success working with clients who become consumed by the pivot in the golf swing and the complexities of the takeaway. Many players get stuck trying to manipulate the club with their hands or arms, which often leads to tension, inconsistency, and an abrupt sn**ch away from the ball. By simplifying their focus and redirecting their attention to how their body moves the club, I’ve seen immediate improvements in both rhythm and ball striking. Helping players understand that a quality pivot can organize the entire backswing has been a powerful breakthrough for many of my clients.

One of the most effective adjustments has been getting clients to focus on the trail shoulder simply turning back. This single cue removes the urge to grab the club away with the hands and eliminates the sudden, jerky takeaway that so many golfers struggle with. When the trail shoulder turns behind you naturally, the club moves away smoothly and stays connected to the body’s rotation. Clients quickly notice better sequencing, improved width in the backswing, and a calmer start that sets them up for a more repeatable swing.

Another key success has come from having clients gently push down on the handle with the target thumb pad as they turn that rear shoulder behind them. This pressure cue works perfectly with the pivot, guiding the club into an ideal position without conscious manipulation. With the added benefit of getting the trail wrist extension without even thinking about. Players feel the club setting itself on the functional plane while their body continues to rotate, creating a powerful yet effortless motion. The combination of these two concepts has helped clients simplify their takeaway, trust their movement, and ultimately produce more consistent, confident golf shots.

Production versus Performance: Production refers to the quality and quantity of what you are trying to do.

*Performance asks if you are effective at what you are doing.

**Production asks if you are effective and efficient at what you are trying to do, and if the resources matched the final product.
You can use this formula in all aspects of your life to gauge where you are, where you want to be, and whether you are utilizing your time and effort wisely.
