Greetings from your league manager and “Red Team” captain- Kevin. I was honored to be asked to take this position about 3 years ago, as the league was going through some transition and things were a bit unsettled. I hope during this time, I’ve been able to help foster a fun and enjoyable “semi-competitive” environment for everyone in the league. A few changes I implemented over the years include updating the rulebook, designing the scorecards, liaisoning with the county to maintain the courts, providing game day music, authoring your weekly game previews and recaps, as well as creating and operating the Treasure Coast Volleyball social media accounts.

Unfortunately, work, family and life in-general have made it difficult for me to extend my full attention to the league any longer and I will be stepping down from the manager role, (while remaining active as a player in the league.) Both the Facebook and Instagram pages under “Treasure Coast Social Sports” will remain active as an archive for all the game day pictures and videos I’ve added over the years. Being the pages were personal creations, I do not know if they’ll be able to transfer to whomever assumes the manager role, (or if they’d even want to undertake maintaining them;) but they’ll stay live regardless.

It's been a pleasure to have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the league and I look forward to a more relaxing evening on Tuesday nights- getting back to what I truly enjoy- stress free volleyball! Thank you everyone for your support and help over the years- and I’ll see you on the sand!

Championship re-cap:

What a dramatic end to a fiery season to start 2023! The final four teams going in were no surprise as they have all been dominant the past several seasons. The action began as court one featured #1 Sets on the Beach taking on #4 Grateful Diggs. Sets came out focused and methodical, firing on all cylinders and playing nearly error free ball. Diggs did their best to keep up, but in the end- it was all SOB as they put up an impressive 3-0 win to advance to the finals. Shout out to an awesome ‘Diggs team; they’re still tweaking the roster each season and remain ultra-competitive. Their veteran players set the standard for sportsmanship in the league and they’re always a fun challenge to any opponent.

On court #2- #3 Pitted gave #2 Misfits everything they could in a long, grueling 55 minute dual. Pitted played their hearts out, but a few too many internal miscues left the door open for the offensive juggernaut in Misfits. Many long volleys were had as Pitted covered the sand like a blanket but Misfits slowly and surely whittled away their defenses until they were the last team standing. In a marathon match; Misfits advanced to dethrone the defending champs and earn their way to another finals. The back-to-back defending champs put on another great showing this season but the influx of new competition is fierce, and Pitted will need to adapt their play to stay competitive in the evolving league. As they enter the off-season we all wish the best for Nicole and Russ as they get ready to welcome their new baby to the world!

He 7pm games set the stage and the first champion contenders of 2023 were set- #1 Sets on the Beach Vs #2 Misfits. A lot had changed in the 3 months since SOB defeated Misfits 3-0 to open the season, and Misfits were looking to not only avenge that opening week defeat, but earn their first title in team history. SOB started with the ball and took an early lead as the teams went through a feeling out period to start the match. Game action intensified with some long volleys, hard hits and great defense from both squads but SOB seemed to be in control, taking the first set by a few. Misfits came firing back in set 2. Mid way through the match, SOB held a slim lead and were looking for a potential sweep reminiscent of week 1, however a disputed call led to a re-play and gave Misfits a chance to regroup. Misfits came back on fire and took the second set 15-13. The sleeping giant was awoken as Red Team started with the ball. Serving ace Amber fired off point, after point, after point to secure an unprecedented league record 15-0 serving run/shut-out! The momentum was all SOB at this point, but the Misfits were not ready to give in. SOB came out of the gate a little lackadaisical and Misfits pounced. SOB fought their way back into the match and the squads fought hard with the Misfits ultimately tying up the series. A long, intense night got even longer as the Championships were going to game 5. SOB started off 4-1 before another stoppage in play due to controversial calls. After what felt like an eternity; the game resumed. From that point forward; Misfits deployed a line-up that gave them the advantage. Lead by the precision ball placement of Zack at the net; Misfits rattled off a plethora of unanswered points, catching SOB off guard and unable to adjust. By the time SOB was able to force the side-out, the damage was done. Misfits held the advantage 13-11. Curtis entered the game to serve for SOB- known to be arguably the best server on the team, Curtis- (playing admirably through fresh injury and bandaged extensively) aced his first serve bringing the game to 12-13… Misfits were able to field the ensuing serve and catch SOB defenders creeping up to the net. Misfits shot a ball deep forcing an errant return by SOB that never made it back to the net. Blue team lined up to serve game point, with a chance to earn their first Championship in team history- the serve was up and play ensued; Misfits went to the deep well once again catching SOB cheating in. A perfectly placed strike in the deep corner crowned the #2 Misfits as the 2023 Treasure Coast Social Sports winter league Champions! Couldn’t ask for a more entertaining, hard-fought contest to end the season. Congrats to the Misfits on their well-earned title victory, and a huge thank you for the players who reffed!

Registration for the Spring season is open for returning Captains/Players- general registration will open towards the end of March. Sign-up now at www.citykickball.com to secure your place for the upcoming season. The league will evaluate expansion depending on registration demand, so there may be 9pm games added to the summer schedule to accommodate additional teams. Stay tuned for registration news/announcement from your league manager Kevin coming tonight/tomorrow. Thanks everyone for another fun season!

Playoff Spotlight:

#1- Sets on the Beach- Red

Coming into the season boasting the most complete, well rounded roster in team history; Sets on the Beach remain undefeated. SOB has an elite mixture of veteran talent and youthful athleticism that features the full spectrum from powerful attackers Matt and Seth to defensive ace’s Amber and Kotah, packed with balanced players between. SOB is the true Cinderella story raising from winless seasons to multiple championships. Heralded as the leagues “favorite team to hate”- you can’t argue with the dominant streak red team has been on these past few years. SOB suffered a few injuries along the way this season and won’t be at full health going into the championships, but even at less than 100%, SOB has learned to thrive through adversity and enters championship week as THE team to beat. Red will face off against the Grateful Diggs looking to eliminate the veteran team for the third consecutive season in the playoff eliminations.

Playoff Spotlight:

#2- Misfits- Blue

The Misfits came into the league in 2020 as a start-up based off a free-agent team featuring former league players Dennis and JR. Misfits recruited a myriad of new and former players and rose into title contention in just a few short seasons. Since their inception, Misfits have fought their way into the top 4 season after season, but haven’t yet been able to reach the tip of the pedestal. This season, Misfits are in true “win now” mode as they parted ways with several veteran players for younger, offensive minded talent. Fueled by the attack power of newcomers Zack and Cam, combined with veteran attackers JR and Phil; Misfits are looking to steamroll their way to a championship. They suffered a single loss in week one this season and have since rolled effortlessly through the competition. Misfits did recently lose a key defensive star player in Gabby; but have shown they have the offense prowess to bully their way past the competition. Before we can crown them champs just yet, they’ll have to face the defending champs- Pitted in the semi-finals. In a classic battle of offense vs defense; we’ll see if Misfits can send Pitted packing for the second time this season!

Playoff Spotlight:

#3- Pitted- Jade Dome/Teal

The reigning, defending, two-time, back-to-back champions- Pitted come in ranked third to start 2023. Pitted came into Langford a short two years ago, new to volleyball but drawing from their years’ of experience playing soccer together. However, it didn’t take Pitted long to become competitive in the league. Returning the most consistent roster to date, Pitted has quickly ascended up the ranks and took home back-to-back championships in record time. Pitted relies heavily on their youth and athleticism to cover the court with blazing speed and rarely lets the ball hit the sand. In what’s been a surprisingly down season for Pitted, they’ve lost 2 games to the number one and two teams but are still the defending champions and have proven they have what it takes to win and stay on top. Were the champs just coasting through the season and waiting for the playoffs to unleash their full onslaught, or has the league figured out a way to ground the dominant team? Pitted will have their hands full with a stacked Misfits team as they seek revenge for one of their earlier losses and fight for an unprecedented third consecutive title.

Playoff spot light pt 1:

#4- Grateful Diggs- black

The veterans of the league with players dating back to the inaugural seasons of volleyball at Langford; Grateful Diggs are the forth seed coming into the playoffs. Known by several names over the years, but still featuring some of the key players that led Diggs to multiple championships; Diggs are the last remaining true dynasty. While not the most dynamic team in the playoffs any longer- Diggs makes up for what they lack in raw athleticism with experience and pin-point accuracy. Lead by jack-of-all trades Zakki, and accompanied by offensive ace Eric; Diggs have settled into a more controlled style of play that emphasizes stonewall defense with precision offense. OG members C**t, Andrea and Jamie round out the roster along with Emily and Kyle who bridge the gap between the experienced players and the new generation coming in. This mixture has helped Diggs stay relevant over a decade of volleyball while methodically racking up win after win. They’ll need to tap into all the experience and etiquette they have as they face an undefeated Sets on the Beach team looking for a perfect season. While SOB may be the favorites, it certainly wouldn’t be an upset to see the veteran team prevail and end the night with yet another championship to add to their collection!

Tournament round 1 recap:

And then there were four…

A great mixture of match-ups saw the end of another season for four of our teams, as the winners advance to the semifinals next Tuesday.

Starting out night, Sets on the Beach welcomed back Kotah and Seth to the sand and knocked out a dominant 3-0 victory over Notorious D.I.G. Notorious had several amazing digs as they did their best to defend the offensive onslaught of SOB, but the #1 seed came out firing on all cylinders; highlighted by a best-of-the-season spike by Seth. SOB came out strong and looked the part of their undefeated record in a quick win to advance to round 2. Notorious was a new team that really picked up steam towards the end of the season- we look forward to their return in the Summer.

Simultaneously, in very similar fashion; Misfits took down Settin’ Ain’t Easy with a 3-0 victory of their own. Highlighted by a great come-from-behind serving run from Phil, Misfits advanced over an injury riddled Settin’ team. Misfits continue their winning streak heading into the semi-finals hot on the heels of SOB. Settin’ was a team that was stacked with talent, but suffered debilitating injury after injury throughout the season -watch for a healthy version of this squad to make waves next season.

The mid-card match-ups turned out to be the most intense games of the night. First, #5 Sloppy Sets fought hard against #4 Grateful Diggs in a back-and-forth battle. Sloppy put on a valiant performance, down a key offensive weapon against the former champs,. However it was Grateful Diggs that had the stamina to prevail and lock down the match with a set 5 victory that advances them to the semi-finals. Shout out to Sloppy Sets team captain Ryan (and former player Kristin) on their upcoming baby! If you don’t make it back next season, congratulations “soon-to-be“ daddy!

Finally- in another equally hard-fought contest, emotions ran high as Toxico survived an early one-sided onslaught from Pitted that saw them down 0-2 going into set 3. Toxico battled back with persistence taking the next set in OT and then the forth as well. In the end, the defending champions were able to stave off the rising young Toxico team and secure a set/match win advancing them once again to the semifinals. Toxico was definitely trending upward at the end, and brought with them some new competition as well as a firey passion. With one season under their belt, Toxico could be a dominant force in the near future.

Despite the season ending for half the teams- it was a great night for volleyball and a stacked card of fun, competitive games. Next weeks’ semi-finals begin at 7pm and we’ll need volunteers to help referee the opening round match-ups. We hope our departing teams had a great season and look forward to seeing everyone next week for the championship rounds!

That’s a wrap for the regular season; the dust has settled and the final standings are in! For the first time in several years; there are no ties and all standings are based on overall wins!

The surprise match of the night came with Misfits defeating Grateful Diggs in a dominant 3-1 showing. Diggs came out of the gate hot as they edged Misfits by score of 15-13 to take the opener; however it was all Misfits from their as they won the next 3 sets. Misfits were playing without their esteemed serving ace Phil, yet still dominated the sand. Misfits win put them at 6-1 on the season in the #2 seed. Meanwhile, Diggs’ loss drops them to 4-3 and into 4th place.

Taking center stage was a match-up between Toxico and Notorious D.I.G. Having the most to gain, Toxico pulled out an OT thriller as they defeated Notorious in a 5 set match-up. Toxico jumps 2 spots in the biggest change to the seedings as they finish off 2-5 at 6th place, while Notorious D.I.G. weren’t able to secure a match win in 2023 and fall to #8 on the season.

Another nail-biter was fought between Sloppy Sets and Pitted in what was more of a contest than the final tally would indicate. Pitted outlasted Sloppy with two close set victories with scores of 16-14 and 15-12 to start the battle. Sloppy came firing back in set 3 with a dominant 15-8 victory before Pitted quickly slammed the door on any comeback attempt. Pitted finished Sloppy off with a convincing 15-4 win to take the match. The reigning champs settle in at 3rd place with an overall record of 5-2 while Sloppy Sets finish at #5 going 3-4.

Finally, in somewhat of a blowout, a very short staffed Sets on the Beach made short work of Settin’ Ain’t Easy. SOB is still the team to beat as they finish the season undefeated; however a recent shake up in roster availability have the league’s most dominant squad facing an uphill battle going into the playoffs. Meanwhile, Settin’- (dealing with some injuries on their own roster,) weren’t able to secure a set win on the night and fell to 1-6 on the season, putting them in 7th place overall.

The standings are set and the schedule is posted for the playoffs. The season ending tourney begins next Tuesday and consists of single elimination matches. All regular season rules apply. Match-ups are based on regular season record, with the higher record team having first choice of ball or side for each match. Referees are assigned for round one, however we will need volunteers from teams that are eliminated to help ref the 7pm games of round 2 (3/7.) Please come out and support your fellow players as these will be some of the best games of the season with the championship title on the line!

Week 6 recap

Week six is a wrap and only one more week left in the regular season! Two games in particular stood out with phenomenal back-and-forth battles, both taking center stage on court one.

First- the undefeated Sets on the Beach defended their record against a rising Toxico team. Sets came out without a top contributor as Curtis missed action this week. However, SOB didn’t skip a beat in the first two sets, outscoring Toxico 15-8 and 15-9 respectively. Set 3 went down to the wire as Toxico rallied around and injured Edgar who went down late in the match. Playing for their vocal leader, Toxico pulled out a 19-17 victory that saw set 4 begin with just minutes left in regulation. With time expiring and a best case scenario tie at 2-2, Toxico was unable to replicate their set 3 upset and fell short 12-15 with SOB getting the 3-1 victory. It was a highlight reel battle at the net between Matt and Seth of SOB vs Cordell and Harold with a plethora of hard hits and stonewall blocks. SOB remains the team to beat this season as they close in on a perfect record.

Not to be outdone, Misfits and Pitted faced off at 8pm in a 5-set slugfest. Pitted came out very slow and looked like they may be shut out by the offensive prowess of Misfits. However a mid-game rally ignited a fire in the Champs and they rattled off 2 consecutive wins to tie the match at 2 apiece. The Misfits were able to tap back into their initial performance and dominate set 5 with a 15-4 set win to secure the match 3-2. Misfits are coming on strong in a late season push, however cannot catch SOB for the #1 spot due to a head to head loss. Misfits will have another tall test ahead of them next week as they take on Grateful Diggs.

In other action; Sloppy Sets continued to roll as they defeated Settin’ Ain’t easy in a 3-1 match-up. Settin’ had a strong showing in set 3, but Sloppy’s talented roster was able to secure the victory and continue their ascent. Sloppy now sits at 3-3 on the season and could edge out the Champions with a head-to-head victory in the final match-up of the regular season.

Finally, Grateful Diggs pulled out a 3-0 victory over Notorious D.I.G. After putting together a strong performance last week against SOB, Notorious fell flat against the former champs. Notorious is still seeking their first win of the season and will face an improving Toxico squad next week. Meanwhile, Diggs will have to take on the surging Misfits in a battle for #2.

Stay tuned for the week 7 preview due out Thursday!

Great night of volleyball! Perfect weather and competitive match-ups across the board.

The night was highlighted by Pitted and Grateful Diggs trading set wins that ultimately saw the defending Champions Pitted come away with the victory. This game will have huge implications as Pitted is one game out from first place. Meanwhile, Diggs’s loss puts the #1 spot in distant view as they drop down to the #4 position and trail Sets on the Beach by 2 games. It was a great back and forth battle that nearly ended in a draw as the teams were running out of time. Kudos to Pitted and Sloppy Sets for allowing the final match to run a bit over- it was a great contest between two formidable teams that I’m sure will be seeing plenty of action in the later rounds of the tournament.

In other action, Sloppy Sets opened up strong against Toxico, taking an early 2-0 advantage. Toxico was finally able to rally in the third set to secure a win before Sloppy took the match win in set 4. This match was highlighted by some great plays and long volleys, many of which were livestreamed on our FB page. Sloppy Sets are coming off their second consecutive win and working their way up the standings. Meanwhile, Toxico is still struggling against veteran teams and will need a late season push to make waves going into the playoffs.

On court 2, Misfits continued to play strong as they took down Settin’ Ain’t Easy by a score of 3-1. Misfits were off to a commanding start as they held Settin to 7 and 6 points in each of the first two sets. Settin’ lost team star Gus due to an unfortunate injury in set 3, which ignited a spark that brought them to a set victory. However, the momentum was short lived as Misfits came firing back to win set four, 15-6 and keep them locked into a battle for 2nd place. Misfits will face off against Pitted next week in a huge match-up for the 2nd seed.

Finally, in true trap-game fashion, Sets on the Beach came out of the gate slow and sloppy. Star offensive powerhouse Matt B was a late scratch for the game and the top rated team just couldn’t find a consistent rhythm. Notorious D.I.G. took advantage of their mistakes and pulled out a 15-12 victory in set one. The pendulum began to swing in SOB’s favor as they won a close match in set 2 and a decisive 15-6 victory in set 3. Perhaps going into cruise control a little too early, SOB allowed Notorious to claw their way back to a set 4 with a 15-13 win. All tied up and playing to 11, SOB pounced on Notorious with a final 11-3 victory to win the match. Never underestimate an opponent and SOB nearly got knocked off their undefeated pedestal.

Two more weeks left in the regular season. Games are on for next Tuesday; despite the Valentines Day holiday. Check out the schedule and preview coming later this week for details.
