Really proud of 2027 QB Luke Finn.

Luke put in a ton of work this summer preparing himself for opportunities like this, including working through our R4 VR Scan Training.

Friday night his number was called on the road against St. X. He went 6/6 for 135 yards and, when Cathedral needed it most, made the glance throw that helped put the game away.

This is what preparation looks like. Luke was ready when his opportunity came, and he showed everyone what he can do.

Cover 3 says you shouldn’t be able to throw the ball deep outside.

But the whiteboard isn’t playing corner.

Every corner has a different cushion threshold. A different hip angle. A different ability to transition and close.

Those differences can turn a “covered” vertical into a shot.

That’s why we can’t teach quarterbacks to simply memorize what should be open against a coverage.

We have to teach them to read the reality of what’s actually happening.

R4 trains quarterbacks to recognize those patterns in real time—cushion, leverage, hip angle and closure—and make decisions based on what the defense is actually giving them.

Don’t just read the coverage.

Read the reality.

Nearly 20 years ago, Boyd’s work became one of the foundational principles we built R4 around.

One of the biggest lessons: a QB can’t process every possible answer in 2.5–3 seconds. The goal isn’t to teach him to see everything. It’s to teach him to recognize the few patterns that matter most.

“He just knows.”

We say it about great quarterbacks as if their decisions come from instinct alone.

But they don’t “just know.”

They have learned how to orient—to recognize the most important information, eliminate what doesn’t matter and connect what they see to the purpose and timing of the play.

That is what allows a quarterback to anticipate instead of react.
